Aux Fuel Tank for Gen 2 SWB
Good Afternoon,

I am looking for a second fuel tank for my SWB Gen 2. The current fuel tank is only around 65l which means that in any long trips or adventure, one must re-fuel relatively often, or carry a serious amount of jerry cans.

Would it be worth getting another fuel tank or replacing the current one to for something larger? I have never seen a replacement tank for a SWB, only a secondary one from frontrunner (model FRPJ40) - see this website (http://www.frontrunner.co.za/fr_products/fueltanks.html). That is another 35l. (I see that Wilfred has one??? - sorry not too sure)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Contact LA Sport Menlyn, they told me they can fit a larger replacement tank. Cant remember the size though.

Hi Tim,

Yes, LA Sport Centurion fitted the front runner extra fuel tank. It is only 35L and gravity feeds to the main tank.

100 litres are not too bad.

One thing to be carefull of is that who ever fits the extra tank, does not damage the rear diflock pipe. The extra tank fits very tight and the rear difflock pipe was damaged. They had to remove the tank again and re-route the difflock pipe.

Also check that the extra tank does not touch the body of the car towards the front part, they have to puch it backwards when fasterning it. Otherwise it makes a terrible noise when driving.

When the new tank is fitted and you fill up, ensure that the pump is running slowly, otherwise you won't get to 100 litres.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks Guys,

I have done all my previous 4x4 fitments with LA Sport in Menlyn - they have been brilliant. I have emailed them this morning to see quotes etc. on the tanks available. I have also placed the question of the replacement tank for the SWB with them.

Thanks Wilford, I needed that advice on the fitment precautions. I'm assuming that the fitments guys will know about this or is that being optimistic? I have never had a problem with LA Sport before.

Will let you know what they say about the fitment as it progresses - oh and which option I’ll likely take.

Vernon (workshop manager) @ La Sport Menlyn is very clued up - he's a qualified mechanic as well - I'm sure he will be aware of it but it cant do any harm to mention it to him.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank for Gen 2 SWB
I have organised with LA Sport Menlyn through Jurie yesterday and the Pajero will be going to get the 35l frontrunner tank fitted on Saturday morning. I have not mentioned anything concerning the precise fitment procedure, but when I see them on Saturday morning I will mention it. Thanks Bomtek - know Vernon, he will probably be the guy to fit it on the saturday.

For those of you who do not know, I asked about the replacement tank for the Pajero SWB pre 2000 (Gen 2). There used to be one, however, it has been discontinued due to the low amount of items sold. Therefore it is only the 35l frontrunner aux tank that still exists as either a replacement or an additional fuel tank. The old replacement tank was reportedly 125l in volume.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank for Gen 2 SWB
Good Morning,

The tank was fitted on Friday and Saturday last week at LA Sport in Menlyn. Been listening for any noises but nothing has changed. Also checked everything the Wilfred said, but seams that everything is working great.

I'm very happy with the fitment. However, it is an incredibly difficult fitment to do because of the tiny space that the tank has to fit in too. It takes a long time to fit it and parts (like the exhaust) have to be removed and re-fitted in order to get the tank in. This has therefore resulted in LA Sport Menlyn saying that they are never going to fit on again to a SWB, due to the complications.

Glad you got it sorted - there goes my plan of having them fit one!

LA Sport Menlyn said that they won't do it, does not mean other places won't. Try you luck, maybe they will help you out.

I have found that fitment centres differ greatly by their commitment to get a job done. I went to Safari Centre and 4x4 Megaworld to get my DB system fitted in the engine bay (I already had the battery from the Colt). They refused to fit the 105Ah battery saying it wouldn't fit but they'd be happy to install a 75Ah battery.

I refused to accept this knowing other people had done the same as I wanted done.

LA Sport readily agreed to do the job for me, even though they had to move some pipes etc. and had the vehicle for around 48 hours.

My point is that a dedicated fitment centre will never turn away a customer because a job is too difficult.

Interestingly enough I read an article the other day which slated the charge per hour billing model as grossly unfair. Granted it related to IT consultants but it's the same in pretty much any industry where one should charge for value offered, not time taken to deleiver that value.
