New tyres for the financially challenged
I have almost done 100,000km on my Cooper ST's and they are looking bad. There is what appears to be a compression ring on the outside of the tyre on the tread walls and tiny bits of metal are sticking out at places, through the treads which I do not understand as the treads are not at the legal limit yet. The know-it-alls at a couple of the fitment centres sed that the tyres have gone off due to age and are dangerous.
Anyway, I think my tyres have given outsanding service and its probably wise to buy something round and black and new.
My problem is that I am severley financially challenged due to varying reasons, as no doubt many of you are.
What is the best tyre/price combo that you know of that will still be great to use and not give buyers remorse later on?
I have phoned around a little and R1500 -R1600 seems to be where things start. Is there anything cheaper that's still good? I am scared of buying secondhand used tyres as one does not know where they have been etc.etc.unless one of you have or know of 31/10.50-15 tyres that are secondhand and their history is known.

HELP!!

Everyone has an opinion about brands, and I respect that. But if price is critical, try Dunlop - they have reasonable tyres that are reasonably priced.

I got mine from TWT Canal Walk. R1200, but I think 16's will be more expensive. GY Wranglers were the same price at the time, but no-one had stock.

Re: New tyres for the financially challenged
thanks for all the replies. I phoned TWT in Canal Walk and the Hankooks retail for R1395 each, on special. I have decided to go with Hercules Terra Trac AW's at a good price of R5380.00 for 4 fitted, balanced with alignment included at Fastfit in Stellenbosch 021 887 2151 . I have read reports on these and most people give them a good report so we shall see....

Edit:
Andre, I added a photograph (hope you don't mind)

Re: New tyres for the financially challenged
My old man tried to teach me that "goedkoop koop is duur koop"

I didn't listen and bought regal tyres for my (now sold) jetta and 15'000km later I bought Continentals because the regals were shot.

What did I learn the hard way : "Goedkoop koop, is duur koop"

There are some deals to be had but stay away from the non-well-known names.
Re: New tyres for the financially challenged
I would not rate Hercules as "less known".
In SA yes, but they have a good reputation in eg Britain.

R/km they might just be hard to beat (same as the Maxxis)
