I have a nice set of BFGs, the sidewall writing on the spare is like new, but you can barely read it in the other 4. How does one 'whiten' up the lettering to make them look new(ish) again...

Grab a bucket of water... and a round rock with a slightly rough surface. Rub the lettering with the wet rock... bob's your auntie.

Or you might just pop in to the local midas and ask them for a tyre lettering crayon
