Hi guys, I'm new to the club and have recently became the proud pwner of a 2000 2.8 diesel. This is far the best 4x4 I have ever owned and am now hooked (should have done this yrs ago!). I have been having cold start up problems from day one so I took the car for a service at Nelspruit Mitsubishi and they also changed the glow plug relay but alas still no cold start up!!(We live 120k's from Nellies {Pilgrims} so it's a mission to take back).I started on the weekend to remedy the problem but am getting horribly stuck....... The relay clicks on when turning the ignition and stays on for aprox 17 seconds the first time and about 8 - 10 secs thereafter but when I measure the voltage at the glowplug bar or were the wire is attached to the bar I get nothing. Am I doing something wrong with the testing or just plain dumb.... Please help as I know this is not a majo problem and would like to sort this out as quick as possible

please describe your symptoms in more detail. does it start and then die or doesn't it start at all and only after extended cranking does it take.
you might have the leaking pump seal problem.
PS : welcome to the forum.

Check the output on the relay itself. If you get power there then there is a break in the wire to your glow plug rail. If no power at the relay output, check you are getting power in (not switched ignition power!) if that OK, your relay is faulty, There should be some numbers on the relay, next to the pins or on top. Post them and I can tell you what does what.

Hi, I had a similar problem, but found power on the common rail, with the dashboard light NOT in sync with the power throughput. Contemplating the issue, I removed the glowplugs and found two to be dead (they are black and stink of diesel). Replaced all 4, and voila, problem solved!

You must measure +12V between the bar and ground(-) at swith-on. If you don't have power on the bar, check at the in-and output of the relay.
If you do get power on the bar, you should measure around 40 Amps DC (With DC Clampmeter.) Roughly 10Amp per glow plug. This gives you a good idea of how many are still operational. If you replace, do all 4 at the same time.
