Pajero Owners Club of South Africa

My 2001 Pajero's remote control stopped functioning (the battery seems fine). A friend told it needs to be re-programmed, but it can only be done by the dealers. I know on some cars you can do it yourself with a simple procedure (e.g. Audi A4). Does anyone know how its done on the Pajero - do I really need to have it done at the dealers?
