WHAT NOW ? no recovery point........

hi guys.
while having the chassis cleaned for roadworthy i noticed that my newly gained pajero doesnt have a rear recovery point. looking at the pix in the book i assume that the towbar was factory fitted over this.
do i have other options as i would hate to loose the tow bar.
worse still, can you imagine if i use the towbar in a recovery situation and someone see`s me...............

Firstly I'd get rid of that drop plate unless you do lots of towing. You WILL get snarled up on it.
You can get one of these hitches - about R500 (for a decent one... not the junk they sell at Midas)

hi.
i like the design of that type of tow hitch, but wont it still be a weak point if i use the "pin" for recovery.
it certainly would be easy to attach the strap,or am i missing something?.
wont those two bolts break from the huge stress placed on them ? and finally.....isnt it "forbidden" to use the tow hitch as a recovery point in the "4x4 circles" even on a pajero that has the tow hitch bolted to the chassis.
or am i just spending far to much time reading the 4x4 forums ?

No
Pintal type hitches are acceptable for recovery provided they are of high quality and bolted on with acceptable bolts. The only weakness in my setup is that the bolts on the hitch do not line up with bolts on the tail piece (slightly lower IOW). So there's an element of leverage applied to the bolts (I am no engineer - let Gerrit explain it)
i have done snath recoveries no problems with my setup.

I like the electrical socket that is in the bumper. That will be on my list of things to do.

Hi Steve,
If you look underneath your pajero at the rear and right and left hand side you will see on the chassis there are prepared hole where you can fit recovery points. I fitted highlift points there and also recovery brackets.
Not sure if all Pajeros have it. My Pajero is a Gen 2,5, 3.5L V6 GLX, 99 Model.
These points are very strong, recovered Land Cruisers (Tanks) with this.
I will take some photos and post it over the weekend.
Regards,
Wilfred

hi.
yep i saw those pre drilled holes and was wondering about them.
the 4x4 mega store is just two km from my house [meadowdale store]so i will go see if they sell hooks that i can bolt in there.however i do like the idea of that pin type towbar, i am of to kempton caravans now to price them.
pajero is still not in my name ,bit of a hassle now as i am waiting to get the papers from the bank as the previous owner still owed the bank some bucks.and i saw last night that the disc had expired at the end of july so now i cant ride it as 21 days have passed by.

............
sorted....
got back from the stores, mega store the towhitch is R800 kempton caravans R600 and outdoor warehouse R500....so it bought it there, all the same and all had the sabs stamp on,if that means anything.

I also own a Gen 2 Paj. and noticed the holes. The bolts to fit there, is it special bolts and where do one get them?
Robert.
