Dual Battery system.

I need the 4x4 enthusiasts to help, if it it advisable to fit n duel battery in the engine compartment seems like there is space but unsure if it could be stable. I got different opinions from two offroad fitters and they also differ with regards to deep cycle battery or not. I drive a SWB 2009 3,2DiD Gen 4. I would appreciate the guidence from the real experts. Thanks

Hi Henniev,

I am sure there is space in the Gen4. The Gen3 can accommodate a 75ah auxiliary battery in the engine compartment.

I am sure someone else will confirm soon...

I have an 80ah deep cycle battery in the engine compartment of my Gen3. It works fine!

Definately possible. The engine bay is actually not the greatest place for ANY battery due to the heat generated, but due to the avaiable space it is always a nice place to put it.

The stability will be deternmined by the strength and points used for securing the second battery bracket.

Appologies for highjacking this fred!
I took ownership of my Gen4 GLS DiD on Thursday and now the work starts.
1. I need to install a dual battery systems and will do most, if not all, of the work myself.
1.1 I will get a bracket from front runner and install behind cranking battery, move the cranking battery to this tray and install a 102HC or 130DC battery in the original tray, I measured it will fit, however how do I get the cable pos & neg to the inside of the loadbay, loads of plastics and where do I enter the cab at the rear for the two cables?
1.2 I will mount a BH connector on the right hand side of the loadbay.
1.3 The two batteries will be connected either with a CH solenoid and and a manual switch inside the cab or go the full hog and get the NL kit.
1.4 I will also run neg & pos to the tow hitch for a 150amp BH connector for the trailer, where can these cables be routed under the chassis?

Any one done anything like this and has photosand advice will be appreciated.

BTW, I don't believe in using any point on the body for earth, all cables run from battery to where required, all connection crimped and heatshrunk, fused and properly terminated.

It is easy to fit a 102ah deep cycle battery in the engine compartment. I frive a 2004, 3.8 GLS and a friend with a 2002 3.2 GSL followed the same route. The deep cycle goes in the place of the standard battery and the standard moves to the back against the fire wall.

Below the battery tray against the fire wall there is a rubber grommet and all your power leads can pass through this into the cab where they will be safe. I f you lift the carper next to the door sill you will find a power loom. Lead your wires along that loom to the back.

Some feedback!
I fitted the dual battery system this past weekend.
I bought the NL kit from LA sport and a 130ah deepcycle battery as well as the FR battery tray.
The new tray fits nicely between existing battery tray and frewall, provided the aircon pipe gets bent a little. The controller goes against the firewall behind the battery.
You have to remove the plastic tray to fit the bigger battery.
I also installed a 150amp BH connector under the towbar for the trailer and a 50amp connector for the fridgein the boot.
I'm just concerned with wire thickness going to the fridge, the wire is as short as possible and only abot 3m long, so voltage dropshould be minimal. The wire is the same thickness as the fridge wire.
