Pajero Owners Club of South Africa

Hi guys,

I am not very technically minded but very frustrated! I bought a second hand Pajero from a dealership and got a Mitsubishi expert (Freek from Mitspro) to come and give me a full report on it and he said there were a few little things that needed fixing i.e. LED's and hand brake adjustment but otherwise a really great buy and vehicle in great condition.

We drove it to his workshop in Centurion and he said they change what needed to be changed and drove it into the workshop and it just died before even turning it off. Ever since then (3 weeks ago) the Pajero has not started and they cannot work out what is wrong. Him and his son saythey have never seen this happen before. The have swapped computers and put my Pajero's computer in another Pajero and no problem apparently with the computer. Excuse my lack of knowledge here but apparently everything else is working fuel is spraying, spark plugs igniting and according to them everything that should be happening is but the vehicle will just not start.

He has hooked it up to a 'Mute'? and that has not given them any indication either? I am not sure where next to with this as I want my vehicle so badly and not sure when i will be able to get it fixed!!

A bit more technical from a friend who has been with me to see Freek says that Freek as noted the following:

"The Engine turns - so there is spark, the ignition works, its not an immobiliser.
There are 2 crank sensors, apparently the one wont let the engine turn if not working, the other I think is fuel.
There is fuel, they have pulled the pipes off and it pumps fuel.

They think its got to do with the injectors not injecting the fuel into the pistons, but they can't see that off hand, they need to check each wire - power in and power out , as the computer is not giving any error codes."


Any advice, people to speak to, experiences that might help me would be greatly appreciated.

I have never heared of such a problem on the Pajero , but the symptoms are very much that of a crank sensor. My "platkar" (a benz) did the same, and after replacement of the crankshaft positioning sensor the problem disappeared. Problem with this sensor is that apparently it does not show on the computer (why, I do not know - but that is what my benz-mechanic said )

Ask freek to "borrow" one from another car and test it. He must also test the wiring to the sensor.

Hope you get this sorted! Such a great car, and probably a very simple cause of the problem.

Remember - the dealership is going to be off the hook if you do not advise them of the problem. With the new consumer legislation you have some protection if a product purchased fails...

Hi Greg

had the same problem twice with my 97 3.5 V6 Crank sensor damaged replaced it no problem the second time thought it was the same thing but found out later that it was the ignition module that had gone.

Check the crank sensor and wire if the wire not routed properly cambelt wear through the wire.

Freek is trying it now however he says he does not think it is the case as it is sending fuel and the spark plugs lighting - Freek was saying that these two things would not be working if the Crank senor was broken??

He said he is trying it regardless now and will see - lets hope it is good news

Have not heard back from Freek so I assume not good news

What next?

Have you tested the compression?
Could the cam belt have slipped a few teeth?

Can it be that difficult to figure out which of the variables is/are missing?

What does a petrol engine need to run?

• Air
• Fuel
• Compression (at the right time)
• Spark (at the right time)

Tick off one at a time, find the culprit and find out why it is not doing what it should.

Is it possible to contact the previous owner? Maybe there is an immobiliser that you guys are not aware of.
