Hi Fielies

Hammerite is very tough if applied correctly. The normal spray cans work fine on items where the "abuse" is less, rims may take a bit of a beating depending on the use of the vehicle. I would always suggest to go for the powder coating, much tougher. But the Hammerite is cheap and could give you the look and feel you desire.

Do the Hammerite thing first, if it does not work/last, have it powder coated. Just take your time on the hammerite spray painting from the can, thin coats at a time, but don'e let it dry too much in between.

My two cents worth - all the best - load some pics when you have completed the painting.

You shouldn't need the Alu primer. Alloy rims are not aluminium and they are coated anyway. Just prep the surface properly and make sure it is lightly sanded and clean.

that was my question also to the salemen. i dont want to roughen the surface with sandpaper due to the fact if i want to take if off im not left with the damaged mag. thats why i opted for the primer

It came out n total stuffup up using a brush. Looks like a grd 0 kid painted it. Ha ha. Luckily paintstripper will be able to take it off, thats the reason why i didnt paint the whole rim. Next opt is to go for the powercoating.

Why don't you just send it in to one of these mag repair places to have refurbished. I am a bit sceptical about the powder coating, the stuff is just too brittle for my liking. The old Smiths white steel rims were powder coated and it used to chip like anything if taken off the black top. Rust would set in and in no time there was a big dab of coastal brown on the rim. At least the alloy would not rust

Having said that did you prep the surface properly? You need to get all the oil and residue off the rim and provide a decent key for the hamerite to grip. I have had good results by spraying the rims for my calibra. Just remember to use the hamerite solvent if you decide to spray it, normal thinners does not give good results

Henk, thanks for the info. Yes I have prepped it properly. Using a brush does not give the right affect as power coating would. I dont think power coating would chip off that easy as I see more and more cars (Mini cooper with factory OE power coated mags and more and more Jeep owners doing it) with power coated mags. Ill have a look and see if I can get a second hand IO mag and power coat it. Will keep you guys updated.

Hi Fielies

Sorry to hear about the outcome, but yes, a paint brush will never produce the desired results.

Regarding the powder coating, this is definitively the best solution when painting any rim, especially an alu rim. I have done many of my bikes' rims in the past and never had any issues. This said choose your tyre dealer well as they can ruin the rim easily if not treated well. If you need a recommended powder coater, pm me and I will send you the details. We use him a lot for all our car parts that we manufacture, even the high temperature units and have never had any issues.

Best of luck and post some pics when done.

Cheers

Johann

I have used it on my Alu canopy and worked fine
