Hi Guys,

Could somebody please help me, I have a 1997 2.8 SWB Pajero with 2 problems.
The reverse lights don’t work, I have checked the switch on the gearbox and the fuses under the dash and all is well, also power getting to the switch on the gearbox and to the fuse under the dash.
The other problem is the temperature gauge on top of the dash does not display the inside or outside temperature.
I have found the inside temp. Sender unit under the steering column and it appears ok. I also removed the 3 gauges from the dash and saw only wires feeding the temperature gauge, there were no globes visible so I don’t know how they display, the other two gauges had a globe with a blue cover.

I assume you have checked the globes for the reverse lights? If so then you clearly have a break in the wiring between the reverse light switch and the lights, try removing the reverse lamp clusters and checking the multiplug alternatively you will need to check the wiring for a break. The feed from the fuse supplies the switch.

I have a Gen 3 so not sure how the temperature reading is projected onto the guage on yours. However the temp sensor you mention is known as a NTC (negative temperature coefficient) this means that as the temperature on or around the senor increases the resistance (measured with a ohm meter) will drop and vice versa. The sensor for outside temp will work the same way.
If you see a change in resistance (even from holding the sensor with your fingers) then is is working, check the wiring at the guage to ensure this resistance is reaching the guage, if it is then the culprit is your guage if it isn't, check for a break in the wiring.

Maybe one of our friend s on the forum can advise where to find the external sensor? anyone?

Check whether any wires came loose at the joint if the harness was split to the trailer plug (that solved a similar problem that I had.

Once you are sure there is current at the fuse box, and that the light cluster is functional. it may be easier to run a new wire from fuse box to the lights. In that case, disconnect and isolate the old wire at the fuse box as well as the cluster (you don't want a short somewhere).
