Ek weet baie sal my kruisig, maar ek moes weet!

GLX you say?

Does it not have difflock? Does it have traction control?

The last trail I went to, the traction control guys did much better than me with just diff lock.... :?

Nee, geen "difflock" :?: Net "traction control" As ek reg verstaan was die eerst 2007 modele sonder difflock.

Have you driven off road with traction control before?

Get someone to teach you the small details (it basically comes down to keeping a constant light throttle and letting the TC do it's thing. The moment you accelerate or let off the throttle you confuse the TC, so just keep constant throttle)

After you have done some offroading and felt how it pulls you out of cross axle situations I hardly believe you would still feel the need of a rear diff lock.

Dirk,

I'll stick to English, there is quite a large following of overseas Pajero owners to this website.

Are you absolutely convinced of your model Pajero? There shouldn't be a single GLX out there with traction control. Is it a SA model or maybe an "import"? You owe us a few nice photies of your new Pajero, so maybe when you post those we will learn more about your actual model.

But yes, you have experienced what most of us here have known for a long time. The Pajero is very sure footed and very able in most surface conditions.

What would you do in a Pajero (fitted with traction control) on a wet and slippery gravel road. Select four wheel drive and leave the centre diff in unlock position, thus allowing the traction control and stability control to do the work?

if you are not accustomed to driving gravel leave the traction control on. If the TC interferes you are driving too fast.

If you are accustomed to gravel, stick it in 4H or 4HLc and turn the TC off.

I think 4e meant to say "if you enjoy getting the tail out on a dirt road" then drop the TC.

But the safe and sure way is to not interfere with the car's "mind". Stick it in 4H and allow the electronics to help you keep her on the island. And like 4e said: if the electronics kick in, see it as a reminder that you just had your bacon saved and don't do it again.

I suppose it's something to get used to.

I have only once experience TC in my father's merc around a wet bend by accident by giving just a tad too much throttle - it was a split second but I hated it. In an instant I went cold as I thought the car was out of control but obviously it wasn't. The TC stepped in to kill the oversteer.

I was so used to be able to counter steer an oversteer that it made me "skrik my gat af". I drive at least 10km dirt every day, 5 days a week in a tail happy mazda 2.5 single cab so I know gravel and oversteer.

I suppose TC is safer once you get used to it but I still like to have the feel and control in my own hands - I'm very used to all sorts of gravel.

For example - Last weekend I drove back roads to visit my wife's family in Douglas (heading back Sunday again) - a very large portion is dirt and some of it is bad dirt. As I'm driving a long I can feel the car move on the loose surface and kinda floating. I'm used to this sensation and just go with it with small movements. If I had TC I'm sure it would have stepped in and make me feel all squimish as I no longer had control or feel (something the TC won't understand). But without the TC in my pajero, it's all down to me and it feels rock solid and so manageable when it does step out it's rear or front.

NB : My dad (4ePajero) told me he also prefers no TC on gravel.

Marius,

Absolutely

Nothing gives me more pleasure than to "feel" a car under me.

When a moved from a 1986 GTi to a 1998 16V GTi Exec (with power steering) I hated the power steering at first. Then you get used to it and will never want to go back again. Same with ABS: my '94 3.0 Pajero didn't have ABS. On dirt roads I would always induce little bits of wheel lock when stopping. The '98 had ABS and I hated when it interfered - then one day I had to brake and turn to avoid an idiot. Same with stability control - it literally saved my life one day on a dirt road - I think most of the "idiot" blame for that day can be laid at my doorstep. But it performed and saved the day.
