Fitting a second aux battery

I have a 105Ah Aux battery in the engine bay, running of a NL charging system. The cabling goes to the back where I have all the Sockets and for the Inverter and fridge and stuff.

How would I go about wiring in a second Aux battery in the back of the vehicle which I can connect as and when I need it (perhaps using a Brad Harrison Plug?

Is it simply a matter of connecting the second battery in parallel with the first aux battery?

Am I playing in the territory of a bigger alternator?

Simon, I have 2 additional batterie in my Gen4. The front is a 65 (70) Ah and the back a 102 which I charge through a CTek 12V to 12V charger. Have not had a chance to give it a proper test but it seems to work reasonable. I will only know in about a months time how it is really performing

Thanks Chris

I have just heard my main Aux battery is stone dead and not accepting a charge, killing my start battery :(

I'm considering swapping out the NL kit and replacing it with a DC-DC setup, but I must admit the NL has been very reliable for the last 5 years, until now (but then again batteries dont last forever)

If one hase a dual-Aux setup, should both batteries be the same for optimum performance?

Simon

I have had an aux 90 amp battery in the engine bay connected with NL system and then a wire running to the back Brad Harris where I had a second aux battery of 105 amp. This has worked for years but it is not ideal as when one battery goes old and does not accept proper charge anymore it starts killing both batteries slowly. Ideally one need to have two exact same batteries of the same age connected as close to each other to make sure they get charged and used and age at the same speed. Problem is that you then always need to buy two batteries at a time, pricey. My system was functioning as well as expected and I thus changed it.

I have now changed my system recently to have just the one 90 amp aux battery in the front connected to the NL system and all radios, spotlights, worklights, compressor, winch etc run from this battery. The Brad Harris plug is still in the rear and my fridge can also be plugged in there if needed. I then installed a DC-DC charger in the rear(connected to main cranking battery) plus two additional aux batteries of 75amp each running my freezer set to -10deg. This setup worked extremely well and the DC-DC charger easily keeps both batteries in good condition within just a short drive after a few days of standing.

So I now have both the DC-DC and NL system to be a backup to each other without having them directly linked to each other.

It was costly but well worth the effort and the installation was not that difficult either. I could do it myself after borrowing a proper crimping tool.

Speak to Renzo at Bushpower for some good ideas and prices.

Cats. Can you provide wiring diagrams of your setup?

I can try and draw one up, but it is basically + to + and -to - and then the connections on the DC DC charger as indicated in the booklet  Even me with limited knowledge could do the DC DC instalation.

I will try and do a diagram tonight and also take some photos.

I have to tell this, though.

Remember the classic RAM quote: "Who will ever need more than 64kb RAM?"

When I contacted Renzo about 4-5 years ago and enquired about DC-DC chargers, his response to me was:
"Who would ever need something like that?"

;)

PS
At that time I started a discussion on the "radical idea of using DC-DC chargers" on the 4x4community forum.
It went over most members' heads, and I was basically shot down for suggesting such a strange concept.

What can we say oom Fourie... You are ahead of your time! :) It also took me a while to get my head (and my wallet) around it...
