1999 AUTO PAJERO sick - just revs when in drive

Hi guys,
On Saturday I was driving my 99 Pajero GLS when i noticed that it was reving very high with no power and 2 minutes later it would not go.
No matter if I put it in Drive, 2nd or Reverse the car just revs and does not move.
What is most likely the cause as I am not to mechanically minded? Could it be the transmission or the auto clutch? Please tell me you don't think it is going to cost a fortune
Any good place near Edenvale to take it too? I will need to get it towed from my place in Modderfontein. I have been taking it to Mitsipro in Centurion but it is a bit far to take it.
Someone mentioned a place called CRD in Germiston? Any feedback or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.
Greg

Have you checked the oil level in your autobox

Hi Colinken, thanks for your response - I have not and would need to work out how to find the oil in the autobox which I will look for now
I would just hope when taking it for its services they would check this. Will let you know - thank you!

Either autobox fluid or the torque converter packed up. Whatever you do, don't drive it! The gearbox has moving parts that need oil even when the car isn't moving so running the engine with a dry autobox is a recipe for failure.

There is a dipstick in the engine bay for checking gearbox oil on the autos. Read your owners manual on the levels and when to check it. I know it's normally best to check after driving the car for a while but in your case you have to check while it's still cold.

Thanks for all you help guys.
The car has been towed to CRD and they have confirmed the oil levels in the autobox are fine but mentioned it could be torque converter?? I think that is what they called it.
Hopefully I will know more tomorrow

Hopefully it is not too expensive.

if it is the torque converter then brace yourself for a hefty bill.
Torque converters range from R1800 - R6000. The labour to split the engine and gearbox to replace the torque converter is usually around R2500.
I'm still curious as to why it failed. TC are not known to fail easily. If the mechanic cannot determine the cause of the failure the new one might walk the same path.....

Thanks for that I will be sure to ask what the cause was if indeed it is the TC. I suppose it will still be better than the gearbox going?

Hi guys,
Well apprently the clutches in the TC and Gearbox were totally burnt out and I need a recon gearbox (R15K-R20K). The guys at the workshop said that the previous owner must have towed somwthing extremely heavy to have it get very hot and be able to overheat the way it did.
Thanks for all you help and hope to get my Pajero back on Friday with a like new gearbox!
