This relates in part to discussions around Imperial and Mitshu parts and a topic on 4x4communuity https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/sh ... ost1045491

It was indicated that a Pajero owner Ordered parts and when it was supplied the price had gone up and the suppliers argued that the order was 3 months old.

Somehow I don't see a major issue about this then when you get a quote it is just an estimate and price is subject to change. (Non-availability by suppliers due to cock-up by Imperial puts a different spin to it)

BUT::::

This is my question and this is what happened to me:
(I dont have invoices and detail near by, will be updated with dates and amounts when I am home)

I ordered a new PC board for the Gen3 late November, I was informed that I need to pay for the part as it is a non-refundable part. So I paid the +-R1500 and the part was ordered an I was informed I will have to wait 6 weeks.

Give or take 6 - 8 weeks later the part arrived. When I picked up the part, I was informed that the price of the part has now increased since I ordered and PAID for the part in full on the order document. I needed to pay another +-R300 before I could take the part home. At that stage I did pay in the extra and off I went home.

What should I have done and what is the norm in such a situation?

What will be my rights regarding acceptance of the part and or refusing to pay the extra cost: Does the fact that I already paid the part on order 6 weeks ago mean nothing?

I will accept that if I had paid ZERO 6 weeks ago I would be responsible for the full amount now.

Just my opinion but I see the money you paid as more of a deposit to secure the part. Just like the quote is subject to variances in exchange rate these also apply to parts which have to be imported on demand. But then again the paperwork should probably state this.

That being said a 20% price increase can probably not be made up of exchange rate fluctuations.

Simon, your right. The paper work might give us the answer. Will have a look.

what comes to mind:
Should the paid document be an order/quote document i can agree that it can arguably be a deposit been paid.

But if its an Tax Invoice that have been made payment on, that tax invoice is binding and should already taking into consideration delivery date and exchange rate fluctuations.

I wonder if the motor industry uses a concept of forward cover?

Certainly we do in the multimillion rand computer kit we sell. Essentially the customer pays a little extra on the original quoted price, which insures the customer against exchange rate fluctuations during the order lead time (which in our case is usually 3 months)
