I compiled a spreadsheet yesterday listing all costs concerning my Pajero diesel for the financial year 2011/2012 and is as follows:

Total km traveled: 55944km
Total diesel used (L): 6637L
Total diesel used (R): R69654-00
Average diesel cost/L (R): R10.58
Average km/L : 8.4km/L
Total parts, service, oil: R24938-00 (4 x new tyres, recon -starter, 2 x rear brake discs etc incl.)
Total tracking fees: R1764
Total insurance: R12985-00

Running cost /km: R1.98/km (excl installments and depreciation)

How does this compare to your figures?

Are you interested in only Gen3's?

And only outside motor plan?

Can i mak some suggestions?

Key drivers of cost will be (pardon the obvious ones - for completeness sake):
- current mileage
- year model
- type (gen 2, 3)
- gls or glx
- time period over which costs were measured
- no of kms travelled during period
- petrol / diesel
- primary use (city driving, long distance, workhorse, overlanding)
- serviced at dealers / non-dealer serviced / self serviced
- tires replaced (maybe have cost seperate, as tires can skew results a bit)
- auto / manual

We can have some fun ones as well:
- s2o used?
- 50 or 500ppm used mostly
- average fuel consumption (on average an indicator of how hard the car is driven :)
- car used for towing
- been involved in accident
- original engine or reconditioned

Considering my paid job is to design and develop analytical databases, perhaps this is something I need to sit down and think about. Karl raises (and has raised before) some valid points.

IMO cost of ownership is some nebulous term the AA has devised with the banks and the fleet management software vendors. This has little or zero to do with the real world unless I'm claiming mileage back from my customers :P .

I'd like to build a decent database to support the real world and a google spreadsheet isn't going to work.

So... anyone with PHP and HTML experience who can develop a front end for me while I do the backend?

Would be a fun exercise.

Yes, the info can be refined a bit more. I simply used the SARS blue log book and entered all the daily km's and costs, while keeping ALL the slips. At the end of the financial year I compile all the costs in a spread sheet for tax purposes.

I did not use 2SO all the time, very little actually, mostly long distance hilly-type driving, ran on 50ppm and 500ppm etc. So the data is not 100% scientific accurate, but a lot closer to anything else I can find. It gives me a good indication what the Pajero is costing me per km.

Only problem now is that I calculate every trip I make to the corner shop for bread and milk - now you see what a loaf is really costing you!

3km + 3km @ R1.98 + R10 for loaf = R21.88

Downloaded the AA rates for my 2008 3.2. Running cost per km = R 2.29. The fixed cost is a lot scarier. Based on 25 000 km per year, the fixed cost is R 3.78! So total cost per km (AA rates) = R 6.07! This makes your loaf of bread R 46.42. So buy 10 loaves at a time (Freeze them) and 24 litres of Long Life milk...... And maybe a Mitso IO?
