I have recenlty sufferred a phenonenom that had me quite baffled. Had a flat on the right hand side and once spare was fitted had to bleed at fuel filter as it had air in the system. Once bled it worked fine. Again after this incident i just parked (again with the right hand side elevated) and again serious air leak. I discoverred that the float switch thread that screws into the bottom of the filter was not seating properly and if you bleed the system it seems to take in air. The cap has a oring that is supposed to seal it, but if the thread is buggerred then becomes a problem. I sorted it by applying pipe rope (thin white ones used for water pipes) and once this was in properly sealed the filter. I did order a new unit, which currently is on back order from JAPAN for R280.00  , I will however keep some nylon rope or some kind of epoxy sealant handy on the next trip.

I had a similar issue with my work bakkie. A 2.5 Mazda drifter TD.

When parked nose down it would start right up in the morning. If parked nose up or level it would start and die after 3 seconds or so.

I later traced the fault to the primer pump seal leaking air into the filter.

Replaced the fuel filter flange/primer assembly and bob is my uncle again.
