This is my first post on the site and I am looking forward to participate on the forum. My 1997 3.5 V6 pajero dies when rev's is below 1000 rpm,I have serviced the vehicle at Mitshibushi about 3 months ago (240 000km) - no problem!only the standard service items. Now SAC CT tells me i will have to replace the air intale m/fold (a costly excercise!)after running a diagnostics. In the mean he has adjusted the idler until the new part arrives.
There is no 'check' engine light and the vehicle runs well!.I have only replace the battery then the problem..As I have no technical background and will appreciate some feedback.Do I replace or can a part be engineered that will fix the problem.

Hi Jacques,
I am from Holland and my English is not very good but I try to answer your question.
If your inlet manifold is letting "false air" in that makes your engine stop at low rev's you can take it to a flat bench machine (you call it that?)and have it taken off the smallest amount of material that makes your manifold plane again. Put some new gaskets in and that must do it. Hope it works for you! Dirko

Mine does that too after the battery is disconnected, (due to a small air leak on the bush in the manifold) But "Learns" to idle again after a few hours of driving. The computer is intelligent and adjusts the idle eventually.

Hi Mooch,
Totally true, when the power goes off, the accelerator valve sensor is having a reset and starts of at zero. After a while, when the computer feels that there are not enough rev's (mainly because your accelerator valve is dirty and closes the tiny opening to get air through)the rev's will be restored to give enough space to breath. There is a procedure from Mitsubishi to that before you go driving as well. It is in their Repair Manuals.

Thank you Guys! I really appreciate the comments .As a 'risk-averse' guy I would have normally go ahead and replace the manifold but have took the advice of Alan at ANG service centre in Killarney to wait , rather than to replace.
In the mean time we have took the Pajero for a week-long trip which also included a serious 4 x4 route in the Koo-valley mountain range. We were the only people on the route and it was drizzling. One thing that I have learned about the Pajero is that it is a very strong and capable off-roader, and we have had no problems.
I will keep you informed.
Regards,
Jacques

Hi there Jaques this is Dries. About your intake problem, take the idling control valve of and see if it works properly, you can even clean it with electro clean. This valve normally gets sticky and doesnt operate as it should.Hope you get it right.
