One for the engineers - mock-up to final product
Ok, hypothetically speaking...

Lets say I have a mock up of a project, made out of cardboard or plywood (in this case a bumper). It's basically an exact replica.

Now, the mockup was made up of all sorts of bits and pieces glued together. How does one translate this into an exact cutting and bending plan to take to the steelworks to cut and bend? How does one decide what bits should be bent, and which should be welded? How does one specify the angles and stuff for the bends?

Just trying to work out the steps from concept to final product?

I have several projects in mind, not just for the Pajero, but for other things as well.

There are various options.

You could have it laser scanned, but that would most probably be to expensive for a DIY project.

The other is to set up a jig around it (usually a rectangular box) from which measurements are taken.

To decide where to add overlaps is a bit of an art, and the manufacturer will usually have inputs here.

An other is to take the prototype as it is to the manufacturer and get him to measure and produce manufacturing drawings (to pass on to your friends :D ).

(I would opt for the last option)

Post some pics so that we can see what it looks like and maybe some guy can maybe help you out. I know Jotto made his own bumper and he would maybe able to help

Simon,

One word: "Versigtig".. If you were in Peretoria, we could try and make it from your sample and from that make suitable drawings for future bars. But seeing that you are in the promised land, I do not know.

Hi Simon, I am in CT and have been contemplating the same ideas. I know there are a number of 4X4 owners who want the look, but not the real deal when it comes to 4X4 accessories. I would like to produce some fiberglass bumpers but don't have a clue where to start. ;)
Would be interesting to hear how you progress.

Well the issue is I have many ideas in my head and have yet to actually build a mock up... Once I have got many maintenance issues out of the way (rust, leaks power-steering pump etc, I will start on a couple of ideas.
