Free flow - Pajero 3.2 Di-D

Removed the center silencer box on my Pajero last month but just put a straight pipe in.

It was a bit loud and raspy so today I took the pipe out and put a free flow silencer in.

Now that the noise isn't taking my attention I can report that it makes a difference in performance and pulls better now and with the free flow silencer it sounds almost identical to the big box it had before.

Recommended? Yes! Definitely!

[BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfXvy7jqU5I[/BBvideo]

the puff of smoke is due to the engine being cold and my glowplugs are past it's time (note how easy it still starts though). My catalytic converter is also removed.

I only revved to about 2700rpm so the turbo hardly spools up to boost pressure if just blipping the throttle like this while stationary.

It sounds louder on the video than what it really is and it's hardly audible at cruising speeds.

Interesting that the mic picks up the turbo whistle but my ears didn't. You will notice how quickly the turbo slows down, so idling down is for cooling the turbo, not for slowing it down as some proclaim.

My experience exactly. I even get a better fuel consumption.
On a shortie it is of course the rear box which is the main box.

You can do it on any car.

i heard that a 2.5" pipe will improve performance and consumption.

The stock pipe is 63mm so 2.5" is close to stock anyway and flows more than enough. Going bigger than that is pointless as the bottleneck is still the exhaust manifold and turbo flanges.

Replacing the silencer box with a freeflow help a lot and deleting the cat helps a lot as well. I doubt you will get more out with a bigger pipe unless you rework the exhaust manifold and turbo flanges but then you endanger yourself for metal fatigue and cracking.

ok so the std pipe is already 2.5". cool less money to spend. how much improvement in consumption would u estimate. or is this a "how long is a string" question

I dont think it aids consumption a lot but it definitely frees up some ponies in the higher rev ranges.
