My gen 4 had this sound when turning (like something with rubber grinding noise) the steering so went to dealer and they fixed it however they say the "clock spring" is abt to give up..
Is this a common problem on pajero?

Hi Ian,
What sort of vintage is your paj?
Clock spring failure is not unknown in older vehicles.

The car hasn't been in a bit of an accident by any chance? My 2003 GLS did that after I wiped a poor Polo off the map. Turned out to be the airbag - or so the dealer said after fixing the problem.
The clock spring failed on my 1998 3.5 Blister at about 90k. The symptom was a dead hooter and cruise control. So sound and no warning. On removal we could see the wire was pinched. We concluded it was a manufacturing error.

@GertM - its the mechanism that allows electrical signals from components on the rotating part of the steering wheel (airbag, horn, cruise control, etc) to link to the static wiring harness in the steering column.
I have NOT stripped one - so have to guess that instead of sliprings (which wear quickly and cause lots of intermittent contact problems) the paj is fitted with a set of electrical connections in the form of a spring that winds up a bit as you turn the steering wheel one way and unwinds as you turn the wheel in the opposite way.

Gert,
The one on my blister looked exactly like a fishing reel. It really is just a wire that sits on a reel with a tentioner spring. When you turn to one side it winds up and the other side it winds out.
I only threw the old one out recently during a garage cleanup - one of those that SWAMBO demands with a threat of doing it herself if I don't

. Pity, lost a good opportunity for a picture illustration
Maybe they became more hightech since then, especially with the mutitude of steering functions on the Gen4 GLS models.

Josef,
A 2008 should potentially still have a maintenance plan to the end of the year (if under 100k). If you still have that cover, get then to replace it now. I think mine cost about R1500 more than a decade ago.
How did they fix the noise, with a good old Q20 spurt?
