I recently did a trip with my Paj and was pleasantly surprised by its fuel consumption compared to my friend's D4D double cab 4x4.

We both filled up in Windhoek, drove together (the Paj in front for more than 300km) and stopped at the same fuel station in Keetmanshoop. A distance travelled of 499km according to the Paj's odo. The travelling speed was 130km/h on the GPS.

In Keetmanshoop the Paj took 46.39 litres of diesel and the Toyota 58 litres.

That equates to:
Pajero: 10.76km/l (9.44l/100km)
Toyota: 8.60km/l (11.63l/100km)

The Paj had four adults in it with some luggage. The Toyota had 3 adults in it with a little more luggage. Neither of the vehicles had roof racks, winches, after market bumpers, spotlights, etc fitted. The Toyota had a canopy fitted. Both vehicles had A/T tyres fitted.

The Paj had an engine oil change just prior to the trip and the EGR valve was replaced with a new one. The Paj also had 200ml of two stroke oil in its fuel tank.

The Toyota has a manual gearbox; the Paj is an auto. The Paj weighs about 400kg more than the Toyota (estimated).

I was seriously impressed with the economy of the Paj compared to the Toyota D4D, and will no longer bitch and moan about its fuel consumption.

It is precisely that balance between onraod and offroad performance that makes it such a loved vehicle!

Grrrr. I wish I can get those figures. I hardly ever travel over the speed limit and get about 13l/100km from my 3.2 Di-D 2001 A/T LWB.

I'm starting to think the auto line pressure isn't what it was from the factory...... Time for some research again. It never ends.

After I cleaned my EGR vavle my fuel comsuption improved. The vehicle also feels better. I have a 2001 3.2DID and will adise that you clean or replace EGR. I am going to replace my EGR and keep the other one as a spare.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is used to re-route a small percentage of exhaust gasses into the inlet manifold at certain throttle positions to cool the combustion process and to cause the engine to emit less NoX gasses into the atmosphere. Ie it keeps the greenies happy.

It is situated on top of the inlet manifold, there is a 25mm steel pipe linking the valve to the exhaust manifold via a flat rectangular box which cools the exhaust gasses before the enter the inlet.

I am going to blank mine off soon, my EGR valve was clear, but I don't like the gunk it deposits when it combines with my PCV gasses.

I drive a d4d Hilux and a Pajero 3.2 did (swb) and their consumpsions are basically the same

I think 500km is too short a distance to gauge fuel usage. The fillups could easily deviate by a few liters.

I love the pajero but the D4D engine is not a bad engine by any margin.
