Planning a trip to Mabuasehube Reserve in Botswana during April Easter 2012, I decided to fit a LR Tank from Safari Center in Menlyn. Adding 40 Liters to the 70L tank will surely help in an area where no fuel is available (Traveling via Jwaneng). I enjoy the extra fuel, but that is where it stops.

• When the Vehicle is loaded, the Spare-wheel sags below the rear axle, meaning it drags on the middle-mannetjies.

• The extra tank does not empty, so I only get 30L it seems .. well the Fuel light comes on and after my nerves pack up, I can only fit 100L

• The extra weight causes some see-saw effects which decrease the ground clearance even further .. in effect scraping the middle-mannetjie for guys following with their VW Golf's

Does anyone experience the same? Furthermore, Fuel consumption driving at slow speeds in the reserve (Not stopping / driving .. just driving) is about 6 - 7 km/L .
However, I love the handling and acceleration ... in town. Open Road consumption at 140km on clock is shown as 10.5km/L. So I can say the faster I drive, the better the fuel consumption becomes. I fear stopping then

I wanted to fit a LR tank to mine, but after i found out about the spare wheel that drops, I didn't. I am going the jerrycan route, its a bit of a hassle, but it works. Your fuel consumption sounds a bit heavy at 6-7 kmpl, but its not scary high though. Think about fitting your spare on the roof(maybe roof bars only) just for those type of trips to have it ready for quick access, and sorting out the ground clearance issue. Put it back in its normal place while driving in town and remove the load bars. Just a thought

In continuation to MrDeeSA's request, I have a Pajero Sport 2.5 and am too considering long range tanks, but am sceptical about having to drop the hight of the spare wheel. Is this the only solution to LR Tanks besides Jerry can options which require a roof rack?

In addition, can anyone assist on where to purchase a nudge bar for my vehicle?

I have a Sport with an extra tank. It does drop the level of the spare and there is not much you can do other than put the spare on top. Not a good solution as it puts weight high up.

I am having an EPS suspention with air shocks fitted which will lift the vehicle 40mm and compensate for the drop caused by the tank. I need to carry two spare wheels as I am off the Ethiopia in July so hope this new suspention will do the trick. If not one wheel goes on top of one of the other vehicles.

The other problem with the extra tank is you need to fill it very slowly or you don't get it filled fully.
