I may have set a new record.

After having done just under 190 000 Km (in 5 years) with the 3.2 DiD seeing the inside of the Dealer’s workshop for only regular services, I reluctantly sold it (but its still in the family) to buy a new Gen 4 GLX.

After doing just 1769Km in the new vehicle we suffered the embarrassment of our first ever breakdown in a Pajero  . (This is Pajero number 3). I am reasonable sure that this must be a forum Record – the average Pajero normally lasts a little longer? :)

Travelling along the N3 well within the speed limit it suddenly sounded like a small Boeing landed under the bonnet accompanied by a dramatic loss in power.

Fortunately (if there is a fortunate part to this story) this happened very close to a One Stop so we stopped and investigated – finding nothing obvious. Vehicle started again fine and sounded normal under 1800 RMP. At 1800 RPM the Boeing returned and I was not prepared to push it any further.

Could it be a turbo wastegate problem?

We did limp home (not very far) under our own steam (diesel) at less than 1800 RPM – it took a while and of course there was nobody open to help today so we will see what tomorrow brings.

The dealership I bought this Pajero from is really very professional and I have no doubt they will sort it out without delay – but I have been wrong before.

follow the pipes from the turbo to the intercooler to the intake. Somewhere along the line a pipe ruptured or came loose venting boost, giving you the whistle sound.

Cheap fix! :)

Hi Jakes,

The Agents certainly didn't dissapoint. One call to them and they arranged for the Pajero to be towed to the local dealership but I told them that would really not be necessary cause I could "limp" in there.

The local dealer had it up on the ramp for a check without delay and that's were I left it. They called a short while later and said that 4eP was 100% correct. The braided steel hose from the turbo to the intercooler had a leak on one joint. (Problem is that when you check yourself you cannot find the leak because it only leaks under boost pressure and it was not at either end where you would normally look - somewhere (where you cannot see) there is a join, who knew?.)

Even though it's a little dissapointing that this could happen all's well again and we are back on the road although I am now taking considerable strain from my Toyota friends
