Hi all...i am a newbie to the site and on my 2nd Pajero!

I just purchased a 1998 LWB 3.5 v6 which has almost 172000km on the clock. It did pass an AA multi-point check and has had most of it services upto 160000km.

My question is, FIRSTLY: do i need to have a major or minor service done as the previous owner cannot remember as he harly used the vehicle, SECONDLY: are there any parts etc that need replacing/upgrading or at least a check over to avoid future issues and THIRDLY: can anyone please recommend a decent mechanic in the East London area that won't rip me off and knows his stuff and also won't create any other issues due to poor workmanship?

I really would appreciate any advice/help as i am not so lekker when it comes to engines...

Thank you all

Hi!

Welcome here.

I am not a fundi technically, but I know you have two critical factors when looking at a "new" second hand car. Firstly the cambelt - this was probably done at 100000 km (given the service record - but maybe worth you while to check this), and secondly fluids. I would flush the engine (replace oil with Delo 400 to ensure max protection against noisy lifters - search Delo 400 on the forum for more on this), and replace all other fluids, lubricants and coolant. Just to make sure the hubs are not filled with water or the coolant has the necessary lubricant in (and has not simply been filled with water).

Otherwise 172000 km is practically brand new!

I am sure Marius Fourie (4ePikanini) will come up with a mechanic - he is from East London. Marius knows Pajeros better than many mechanics!

Regards
Anton

Hi,

Yes, the timing belt and two tensioners will need to be replaced at at round about 185000km and it is VERY important to get a decent workshop to do the job. The belt with two pulleys will cost you around R2000. You should check the service history just to make sure that a timing belt replacement was done at around 90 to 100000 km. It will also we wise to change all the belts such as the power steering, alternator etc. when you do the timing belt change. The Delo 400 oil that Anton is referring to is made by Caltex and it is a 10W40. At the same time you can change the oil and air filter. Then I would suggest that you get all the gearbox oils and diff oil checked and or replaced. Last but not least, you should get the suspension checked for possible worn bushes and ball joints.

These are awesome vehicles, enjoy!

hi All

I own a Pajero 3.0 v6 swb 1997 model. this model doesn't have a rear diff lock, but I have been to many places and never really needed it even in severe muddy conditions. However I would like to have a rear diff lock fitted in case I ever need it. can somebody please advise me where to fit an after market rear diff lock and an estimated price.

regards
Veldkornet
