Hi,
depending on how you use it, it might be user problem or something wrong.
Auto or manual ?
This is my experience with my Auto
When shifting 2H to 4H while driving it usually takes long, maybe 2 - 3 km, sometimes I can get it to kick in faster by backing up on the accelerator pedal for an instant, if I shift from 2H to 4H while standing still and the box in 'N' it happens immediatly.
All other modes I engage by standing still and the main selector in 'N' and all of them engages immediatly
(immediatly = less than 10 secs)

Hi Neil
thank you for the information, just a question, we were playing on a obstical course this weekend (first time) so user can be blamed here.
if i am standing in neutral and want to select 4low, do i first have to select 4H and wait til it engages or can i go directly to 4L. i feel that there might be a problem with the time it takes to select after reading that yours selects immediately, so this means i must go play again to ensure i am doing it correctly (yes please)
thanks again
regards
Richard

Hmm, actualy, I have to go and test going from 2H to 4L directly and see what happens, I always engage 4H whenever the front wheels touch dirt, which means that by the time I need 4L I have been driving in 4H or 4HLoc for some distance allready.
I assume that 4L is a different position on the gearbox-actuator than 4H and does not build on the 4H selecting thus going from 2H straight to 4L will be fine and should engage within a reasonable time and selecting 4H first would not realy make a difference, the only thing I can think of is that by selecting 4H first the vacuum system is prepped and when selecting 4L after that you will experience faster engagement, but this is just me reasoning about it and I dont have any proof of this.
try shifting to the diff modes one-by-one in neutral and check how long it takes, if you think to long then you might want to inspect the vacuum piping, maybe the system has a leak, or soft pipe etc. causing bad vacuum and slow activation.

Richard,
To follow up on Neil's advice.
1)2H - 4H selection is best to back-off with the right foot
2)4H - 4HLc is the same
3)4HLc - 4LLc one should be stationary and the auto box in N
I recommend you go through all the 4x4 selections much more regularly to allow the moving parts to "un-glu" themselves. Best is to get out there and use the system

, but if life gets in the way - just do it during your normal day's driving. The low range selection can happen in your driveway.

drive in 4HLc on a straight gravel road at low speed and look for wheel scrubbing.
It's possible that your diff may have been replaced in the past with the wrong ratio.
Are all your 4 wheels the same make, model, size and wear?

will check that,
just back from a test drive
1. selected 4h, 4 green lights, no/little power
2. 4hlc, 4 green lights on, lc amber light flashing. power normal
3. 4llc, 4 green lights, amber light on, power normal
test in driveway:hand brake on
4h, funny noise from front of vehicle, cant move
4hlc, no noise, vehicle forcing against HBrake
