Quote "Even though the independent suspension front and rear together with a monocoque chassis are not the best when it comes to tough off-road conditions, the bash plate, rock sliders and rear diff lock do help"

I have two questions:

1. What's wrong with a monocoque chassis with independent suspension?
2.Do all Gen 4's come with a rear diff lock or is it only on the Pajero Legend edition?

I don't know how to answer the first question, other than some traditionalist will always vote for a ladder frame chassis. I thought the the Ranger Rovers were now also Monocoques with independent suspension. but i'm not technically inclined so what do i know.

for question 2, not all Gen4's come with rear difflock. Only the GLX, on which the Legend is based anyway so its not an addition to the vehicle. If the journo made out that the rear difflock is part of the legend package, they're misleading.

Thanks Red, I was unaware that the Legend was based on the GLX.
looks like a nice package if you have 620k lying around!

it just shows their lack of knowledge as the pajero is a ladder frame and monocoque in one.

Current list of SUV's with monocoque:
1)Jeep Grand Cherokee
2)Nissan Patrol (in Aus - not sure about SA)
3)Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4
4)Range Rover
5)Pajero Gen3 and Gen4
6)Nissan Pathfinder
7)VW Treg

Only "proper" 4x4 SUV missing from the list is the Toyota Land Cruiser - they will catch up with the new century, by the end of the century :D

To follow-on about my previous post.

Suspension travel is a design function. Reality is that a high performance motor in a top heavy body needs a firm suspension with limited travel. The big boys in the game overcame this limitation by making the suspension variable. The most common way is to add air bags and a compressor and a clever computer. This system is far from being a life long setup and is a common problem area on the Discos.

So yes, the Pajero isn't the perfect setup and does have limitations in the travel dept. They do have (in my opinion) the best compromise between open road safety and comfort and off road ability - at a fraction of the cost of an air suspension - and of course no reliability issues.

+1 ... I'm also happy to see that the car has a ladderframe beneath it!
