How to bring down fuel consumption

Hi guys...

I have a question regarding the topic. As everyone should know by now I own a '98 LWB 2800 TDI.

So my Question is this...

In December last year I decided to take a trip down to Ballito. on the way down I had the roof rack on, and on the roof rack, some luggage. Obviously that's going to affect the consumption a lot. When I got to Durban(went through Durban to show the daughter what Durban looks like.) I was sitting on 640kms and the light had just come on. That was just under 14.4 litres per 100ks, if I'm right... I wasn't to worried about this as i knew that I had stuff on the roof, so was to be expected. But now on the way back, I only had the roof rack on and got back to Jo'burg, and then still with driving around a bit the light came on at about 730ks, so the consumption came down to about 12.6L per 100ks.

Now I have taken the roof rack off, never have a really hectic load or tow anything, and with around town driving I'm only getting about 700ks on a full tank which equates to about 13L per 100ks, and with the roof rack on and still unladen the light comes on at about 650ks..

So now comes to the question really. Does this sound right, or is this too high?

I have read about some guys getting 8L per 100ks.

I really want to bring mine down a lot more. So what would you guys suggest. What would be the best way to bring the consumption down whilst driving it everyday?

Thanks in advance...

If everything that I have said here please feel free to crit...

In a cartoon, is my guess :D

How many litres did the car take when you filled up, the only way to get a good consumption reading is by repeatedly filling up and recording your kms.

Hi..

Thanks for the reply...

The cars manual says 92 liters, but I have been able to put more in. the most I have been able to put is 97L But I'm sure that is also including the reserve tank. As for filling up and repeating... Before I went to Durban my average was about 650 on a full tank, I could sometimes push it to 700ks depending on how I drive, for the most part I try not to wack it. I do know what the car does now on average. That is between those two figures, 650 - 700ks. what could I do to improve it though?

I need to mention though that I had it serviced today, just need to change the air filter still, will do that in the next week or two. Once I have that I will try the fill and drive empty test again. Hopefully it will improve by a small margin.

Thanks

Hi,
town driving will give worse consumption than highway, no matter what, start-stop driving is a killer for consumption.
I have a 3.2DiD with roofrack, due to me staying close to work I travel very short distances (6km one way), get less than 600km on a tank. Speed is low so roofrack effect is null, during December I traveled a lot between Pretoria/Johburg and got 680km and 710km on 2 consecutive tanks, traveled between 120 and 130 km/h on the highway.

My astra does the same, town driving 12km/liter, highway laden and with trailer, easy get 14km/liter.

Try driving a different route with less stops and longer straignt section if possible, try diff ways of using the gears and do smooth slow pull-away etc, select gears at correct times (if manual), other than that you just have to live with it (or sell)
O yes, if it is a highmiler you might want to get the injectors checked and the delivery rate, maybe they are worn and spraying to much or not in the right pattern.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice, I will have to try and change my driving still a bit, I'm still young 27 years, So sometimes I like to gun it, though that in the long run I understand it will be bad for the motor.

I never go over 3000 revs, unless I'm trying to overtake, I always try and shift at or just below 3000 revs. I took it for a service the other and only thing still needed is an air filter.

When I bought it this time last year, the engine been changed by the previous owner, just before he sold, so this would be the cars first service since owning it. the motor has done now about 9000ks and the chassis 198700ks. It is a manual, I prefer manual over auto.

There are still somethings that need to be done to the car, but that will come in time.

Yeah so, i will take heed to what was said here, and try change my driving style a bit.. One thing that I have notice, the car HATES cold weather, winter is a nightmare. I have had it where sometimes whilst driving the engine will die if to cold, so I have to idle it for at least 10min before driving. Once its warm... I have no issues. If anyone has any advice on cold starts, I would be glad to read.

Thanks again for the advice

My guess is that all diesels in particular hate cold weather. My 3.2 feels "tight" and somewhat lethargic when stone cold - but generally if you take it easy & stroke the loud pedal gently for a few km's and coax the gearbox into as high a gear as possible on its own accord & without overriding it, it should be fine after a few kays. Much the same in any car, petrol or diesel, I suppose. But then again, I'm no expert, so I stand to be corrected. I remember an old alfa from my youth which had an oil temp warning light that extinguished only when the oil reached a satisfactory temperature in the mornings. That was a handy......

I have a Pajero 2.8 and get around 700km on a tank. This is normal fuel consumption. Tank takes around 92 liters

Hi guys

I serviced my Pajero 3.2 LWB, and when I put in a K&N factory fit air filter, my consumption improved. I average 9.10km/l with town driving.
The K&N can be purchased from Masterparts and is a drop in replacement filter, no modification required. Even if it only has a marginal effect, it is washable and saves the environment as it never has to be replaced. I have used them in all my vehicles and never had a problem...

Hi...

Thanks Bernard..

I will have a look out for a K&N filter..

How much are they, and where could I look for one?
