Hi Guys, I am a new member and hail from Somerset West in the Cape.
My vehicle , a swb diesel has 313km on the clock and the auto gearbox has given out.
I am in a quandry as to what to do. I have been quoted R35k for a recon box and need some advice whether to just scrap my vehicle or go ahead with the replacement?
Any advice on what to do or whereI can get a cheaper gearbox?

Post some details of your vehicle eg: year, model (Gen 2/3??) etc... This will help in the search and advice from fellow members.

Let me guess it is a 3.2DiD around 2001. Looks like a lot of these boxes are suddenly going. Search for my thread - just spent the R30k at Sparklight with 1Yr warrantee - tried the second hand box option at around R12k + labour. Had to remove and redo the original in any case...

Parthunt will source you one, BUT (I can't say much more at this stage).

Other guys quoted me around R18k for rebuild - pm me if you want numbers..

I would like to go out on a limb here to disagree, possibly the only thing more reliable than these auto boxes are the legendary Mitsu 3.2 DiD motors, the bad reports of those Auto boxes failing are are very far and few between, bad luck and owner abuse/neglect I would say are the main culprits, not design.

I am in Australia, so the economics might be different.
I agree that the Gen3 boxes are reliable.
Mine failed at 180K (blocked coolant pipe).
The replacement with one that had reportedlly done 110K, has been faultless so far (20K).
The two points I want to contribute are:
1. You can use one from a later model. You just need an expert to sight the connectors (a photo is fine). If they have the same pins, then it will work.
2. If the fluid in the new box looks perfect, it will not require any work at all, just installation.
