Hi all,
I'm going to look at a 2000 LWB 3.5 GLS Pajero tomorrow. It has 192K on the clock, full service history, ARB bumper, 2" lift and stage 1 (SAC I assume)uni-chip and branches. Asking R89,995. Owner says it is in excellent condition. Private sale.
Does the GLS of this year have the diff lock?
If the vehicle is SOHC, does that mean a post July 00 production date?
Is there much difference in terms of maintenance or anything else between 3.5 DOHC or SOHC?
Does this seem like a fair price R89995 for years and add ons?
Should I assume that at this mileage, valve stem replacements are a given or soon will be, even if the vehicle has been well cared for?
Any other input you might have I would appreciate, I pulled the plug on a vehicle last July because of great input from people in this forum, so anything you think is relevant I'm all ears!

Seems a reasnoble price for the km's Just aboce Trade in value. PS As the vehicle is older than 10 years the "book" values get very eratic PSS Check the description as well. Give me a call if you need a different vehicle 083 460 0464

OK, so it's the Gen3 - which means the single cam motor.
Valve stem seals are mentioned in connection with these motors for only one reason - it is about the only thing that goes wrong IF something goes wrong. It doesn't mean that every 3.5V6 needs valve stem seals at 200k.
The car is 13 years old and if you are convinced it always had good, clean oil and the coolant has always been the correct mix and quality, then that motor can last another 13 years as is.
Same goes for the auto gearbox - if it had a regular diet of correct and clean transmission fluid, then it can also last another 13 years.

Thanks for the information. Every time I see a post by you on this or the 4x4 forum, your communication resonates with wisdom and common sense, I've learned a lot reading your stuff.
I've said no to the Pajero this am. Vehicle was in good nick, but the service Hist. did not materialize as advertized, although it was apparent Freek at Mitsu has seen the vehicle so there was a possibility of creating the history via freek and the stealers and the owner was willing if I was interested in purchasing.
I said no for reasons that I'm still pondering this morning. Simply put the rear fold into the floor bench seat will not work for my family. I have three boys 10, 11, and 13 and they are growing like weeds. The middle one may wind up being the biggest and he loves that back seat position when we travel. Three boys shoulder to shoulder together at that age for long distances is not a good option for family harmony!
The rear seat of this newer Pajero was too small and once put into position, left no room for anything in the back. Sooo I'm pondering whether to go older on the Pajero where the seats fold down and you can leave one out for room and (gulp) please don't shoot me guys, thinking also about a Prado 3.4 or 4.0 as these vehicle are similar, in my limited knowledge, in terms of reliability, but rear seating set up is a little better and has a little more room.
Again, any thoughts are very welcome!

The Prado has always been a good, solid car.
Do your homework on price, model and kms and compare the two brands honestly - you will find the right car.

I would not look at the prado, imho they are over priced (as all toyotas) and less comfortable than a gen 2.5. trust me been there done that. yes the current and the previous prado did change that a bit but if you compare between the paj and the prado of the same age, the jero seems to be a better value.
