Greetings fellow offroaders.
I am in the process of purchasing a 1999 3.5 V6 LWB Pajero but I have no idea what model this is commonly known as. I've searched the web but there seems to be various models available in this year that fit this description.
Speaking to my insurance broker this afternoon, the only listing they have for a '99 LWB is the 3.5 GLS facelift, yet their records show a retail value which is substantially higher than what I'm paying. This makes me doubtful.
I've also had a look at some pictures and have noticed small differences in the headlights, the wheel arches and side steps.
Would someone in the know be as kinda as to help me understand the different models.
Mine is the model without the grey/flared wheel arches and it has the wide, integrated side steps. It is a manual and has leather seats and a rear difflock.
Thanks
Shaun
Hi, interesting name....
Pictures always help in a situation like this, AFAIK the 1999 model is known as the "blister fender" or the Gen 2.5. The Blister fender was made from approx 1998 to 2000 whereupon it changed to the Gen 3 like I have. Also see here for info regarding models:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nick. Did a google search on blister fender and that's the one. Have not taken delivery yet, so don't have a pic, but it's shaped exactly like this one.

So is this also known as the GLS facelift, or is that something else?

The blister fender is known as the Gen 2 facelift or Gen 2.5 and as far as I know we(South Africa) only got the GLS (Luxury Spec) Gen 2 & 2.5 here. In the gen 3 you also get the "African version" or the GLX with the more basic spec(no colour coded bumpers, steel wheels, leather seats etc), but have same engine, chassis and drive train as the GLS model.
I must say sometimes I regret not getting a blister fender 3.5 v6, as they are far more capable off road than the Gen3 & Gen4, and their engines are also more powerful too due to the DOHC per bank... But then again the 5 speed autobox of my Gen3 never ceases to surprise me in how far advanced it is/was for a 13 year old vehicle, and then the interior space and road manners are fantastic. Great over-landing vehicle!
If you do buy first check for cracked exhaust manifolds, they ALL will crack as some stage or another - check when engine is hot and cold as some cracks only open when the engine is hot or cold. Also noisy valve lifters - they can cured by using and overfilling past the full oil mark with 500ml Caltex DELO 400 oil, and also leaky valve stem seals... Also check for worn intake manifold butterfly bushes as it has a dual length intake tract, they can leak and cause uneven idling. - These are the known issues that can go wrong with the motor.
Otherwise a good solid motor if looked after, and shouldn't leave you stranded!!!

Super! Thanks so much for the info and tips. To be completely honest, I was actually in the market for a Prado but they're hugely overpriced. I've decided to settle on the pajero but after having spent a few hours reading on your forum, I'm actually very excited to collect mine.
For comfort on your decision - I drove a 1996 LWB 3.5 to close to 400 000 kms without any technical know how - routine servicing that;s all.
Purchased a replacement 2000(1999?) a 18 months back at 180 000 and its been a dream.

Thanks Pete. Indeed, that comment helps to settle the nerves.
Collected my van on Thursday night and absolutely loving it. I was gutted when my '96 Hilux was stolen about a month ago, but this vehicle is doing a great job at soothing the pain.
I have not gotten her dirty yet so can't compare offroad performance, but it's miles ahead in terms of comfort, drive and power... priority mod is to replace those fancy runner boards with sliders though

Hey Butcher,
Welcome to the family - those 3.5 Blisters were the best. If your's had a well looked-after life, then you will not be sorry you bought it.
Enjoy,
Roelf
