hi ALL i have been having some strange issues with my pajero it a 98 3.5 V6 gen2.5, it all started with the clutch lever going soft so thought it might have been air in the system so took it to a guy and he bleed the system for me and tried it out and not much diffrence checked all levels and they fine, checked slave +master cylinder for leaks and nothing, other than having a bit of difficulty in engaging first and reverse gear it went fine for a few days until i was in a rush home and was pushing the old girl a bit i engaged 1st gear and trammped it and went for 2nd gear engaged and trampped it again when i got up to about 4000rpm i discovered that the clutch pedal was almost on the floor backed of the throttle and it stayed there so pulled it up with my foot and carried on driving at the next itersection i tested to see if it would do it again but this time when i got to about 4000rpm the clutch started to slip? so now i am baffled i have taken it in to a garage and they seem to think it is the clutch needs to be replaced?does this sound correct and at the same time he says to me the pajeros have 3 diffrent kinds of clutch plates ranging from R2000 to R6000 for the kit ? has any anyone had something like this happen to them or even any advice that could help thanks in advance
Hi Clint
It sure sounds like your clutch is history here....a mate of mine has just replaced a clutch on a 'customers' Pajero - although it is a 2.8tdi, the clutch cost in the region of R4800 ex labour....
I believe my clutch is on its way out as well, 3.5V6 SWB, and I have ascertained the clutch is slightly more expensive R5500 ex labour......so a soon as I have done mine, I will tell you all about it.....currently, mine is not slipping, but taking 3/4 to the top of the pedal travel.....I believe once it starts slipping, its history. I am assuming your rear main seal is not leaking oil all over the clutch.....that would obviously cause any clutch to slip!
The reason for the high costs of our clutches, is that they are firstly HD(heavy duty) and secondly, they are 'pull clutches' as opposed to the 'normal' Mitsubushi bakkie which has a 'push clutch! Have fun.

Sounds like pressure plate collapsed.
Have the clutch replaced but spend the extra money and also do
Clutch master cylinder
Clutch slave cylinder
Release bearing
Spigot bearing
Crank seal
Freeze plugs inside the bellhousing if coolant history is dodgy
Gearbox input shaft seal
The sum of the parts above are minimal but most require engine or gearbox drop so while the box is out, have these done.

hi guys thanks for the input we split the gearbox yesterday and have discovered that the clutch is still about 60% ok but have found that there is a lot of dry mud inside the casing and this seems to be restricting the movement on the plates and other bits but i am going to replace the clutch plate and release bearing anyways as i am already there the cost of this should be in the R4k mark and labour is R1200 will say that i wont go anywere near mud as deep as that again will upload a photo. Thanks once again
