Do I sell or keep and use less often.
I have a 1996 3.5 GLS Pajero. Been very reliable and not used extensively offroad - currently Moz and Bots (soft offroad) 2 or 3 times per year. Has work that needs to be done - seat stitching, antenna, door lock, bumpers , scratches, dents etc.
I will only get about 30k as a trade in but feel its worth so much more - probably needs new shocks and a lot more - is it worth a good service by a pro - not a pajero dealer - and keep as a weekend car or let it go and buy something else before clutch packs in or something else expensive?

I would say you are past the point of sell. I mean what will be able to replace that lump of steel for anything near that value? I would say spend a few bob on critical items like shocks and maybe new seat covers and a new antenna and keep a small slush fund for mayor stuff.

You must be doing something right in terms of your driving style! when one gets one of those cars....that makes 300 000 kms then you know that you have one of the best made! Do not get rid of it! that is my advice, fix even the scratches and you will be surprised how you suddenly love it again and it would not cost a fortune. see it as a bit of a project. I mean reliable wheels .... What you going to do with the R30 000? Before you know it the money is gone. If you have parking keep it!

My 2001 PAJ 3.2 SWB DID needs to be replaced, its done 397,000 Kilo's. I have had the motor and injectors and fuel pump redone at 350,000, so mechanically she is sound.

I would like to buy a new Paj SWB (Which will be my second one), and not sure if I should trade-in my old one or sell it myself, dealers do rip us off, so some suggestions would be appreciated, or where would I get second hand prices/trade-in values?

Can anyone out there assist?

Make use of Autotrader to give you an idea of what those models go for in the "Private seller" category. Even the dealers make use of the Autotrader website when they consider your trade-in. They pretend to look at their little books, but in the end they offer you based on what is happening in the real market. If they don't plan to keep the car on their own floor, then you also take an extra knock due to the fact that they play middle-man to the guy that will put the car on his floor.

Trading your car takes all the burden of the sale off you. It also "absolves" you of any near future failures on the old car. If you sell it privately and something goes bang, then the buyer will be back at your doorstep in a flash.

Not really worth selling. Its worth much more as a useable and very capable vehicle. I also have one - same year with 274k on it. I spend a few thousand on paintwork/maintenance a while ago and put cotton canvas seatcovers on the front seats. the seat covers were about R2500 but are nice. It is now used as a second/spare vehicle..

I bought the wife a new platkar and the trade offer on a spotless 2004 Toyota RunX, that has never been damaged and REALLY only had a "lady driver" was so low that I decided to keep it as an extra car. I have crunched the numbers and it isn't saving me money to use the RunX in place of the Pajero, but I just cannot imagine the few Rand I can get for it is better than keeping the car. I even stuck new boots on it yesterday.

I did the searching thing on Autotrader, found the "Ball Park" figures. I then contacted Mitsubishi Motors and asked these same questions to them. It would appear, as was stated, they also use the Autotrader and have a dealer network for these sales. The figure given to them, without seeing the vehicle, seemed to be accepted. When I bought my Paj I gave a deposit, and it seems that I will at least get that back from my trade-in, so I am happy.

That is great news, now you have to keep us posted on the buying progress - you should enjoy the pleasure of making us old-timers jealous with your new smelling, scratchless Pajero.

I am NOT so young either! And are also going to see what the final costs will come to.

I need to downsize loads, as I don't think my wife and I don't need 4 vehicles, so get rid of all and only have two, one that will let me do my Bush stuff, and another to use for running around, as this will be the last time I ever need to buy new cars!

Currently Paj, Defender and Toyota need to be sold and only one to replace all, and I am not sure which one it will be!
