I have just been stranded in the Pilanesbeg with diesel dripping fast out of the fuel filter.
Fortunately the car is still under motorplan, and was "flat-bedded" to the Mitsubishi agents in Rustenberg (Maemo Motors) where it has been diagnosed with a cracked fuel filter!
Has anyone got any idea how this could happen?

Eish. First time I have ever heard of something like this. Must be a manufacturing fault on the filter? Glad they got you sorted and hope all is well after the replacement.

I've had this too but it was a crack in the water sensor at the bottome of the filter, If the filter is cracked could it be it was over tightened?

It seems my problem is the same as yours - the sensor under the filter is cracked. Ironically the car had just had its 70000 km service, and this was the first trip after the service! Before that the car was running perfectly.
Apparently the part has to be imported from Japan - and heaven knows how long that will take. It's already been a week.

Not at all ironic and not a coincidence either. I guarantee the guy who serviced your truck over tightened the sensor. I know because that how I cracked mine.

To solve your immediate problem can you do any of these:
use a soldering iron to seal the crack
go to Midas or similar and match a fuel filter from a different car that doesnt take a sensor.
Take a chance and if your certain of good fuel quality at you last fill up, by-pass the filter all together.

These fuel switches thread is plastic and wears out if over tightened, thus everytime it just eat away the thread, which will start to cause air to leak into your system. These switches are forvever on back order, and there has been some debate on the forum that it is a service item, just like the oil preasure switch.

I suggest order two, as they seem to be problem from time to time, and as murphy has it will always leave u when your far away from home.

Whilst camping in Walvis Bay Namibia, my 2.5tdi wouldn't start. I traced the fault to a cracked water trap as above. I cleaned the two faces, applied Pratley plastic steel, bound the circumference with thin steel wire, and and 2 hours later fitted the trap back onto the filter with liberal thread tape so as to avoid too much tightening.

Bought a replacement in Walvis on Monday, drove back to Zim, and many thousands of km after that, finally fitting the new trap into a new fuel filter when this was due. It was still a perfect repair method even then.
