DiD engine stalling intermittently

Hi All

My 2006 Paj DiD which has 146000km on the clock is starting to give me a slight headache.

After an 800km desert trip the engine suddenly stalled at high speed on the way home. I pulled off the road, engaged Park and swung the starter. The engine started immediately but the idle seemed a little irregular for about 5 seconds. At the time I thought it was a dirty diesel filter as we may have fuelled up at a not-so-well-kept service station in the desert. We continued the rest of our 200km journey home without a hiccup.

I replaced the diesel filter with a new one when we got home. The car has done just over 300km with the new filter. However, this morning the engine stalled on me twice. On both occasions I slipped the gear lever into neutral, swung the starter motor, slipped the gear lever back to drive and kept on going. The engine runs like there was no problem in the first place.

Any ideas what this could be? :?: The air filter also still looks very good!

Any help would be much appreciated!!

speed sensor on the pump or the throttle pedal connector.

Hi superairborne,

I would suggest that you run the diagnostics and see what fault codes there are.

Look for 4ePikanini's post on DIY diagnostics or take it to a dealer with a MUT tester.

This sentence might just point to something:
After an 800km desert trip ....
I wonder whether you have a connection somewhere, with an intermittent loss of contact.

What I would have done:
  1. Wash or have the engine thoroughly washed.
  2. get yourself a can of Q20 / WD40.
  3. meticulously go through all the electrical connectors in the engine bay (specifically those connected to the engine & transmission). Disconnect, spray with Q20/WD40 and re-connect.
Even if does not cure the problem, it is a good thing to do to your engine ;)

Hi This advice coming from a man who cant change a spark plug. I had exactly the same problem . See my post about 4 years ago. cruising at good speed and engine suddenly cuts out. It took me months to find the problem . Couldn't get diagnostic code reading as never happened when agents had it. Eventually agents replaced a sensor on fuel pump and never given a problem since. I have just looked for job card but cant find it. Over time it definitely seemed to cut out more often.

I hope that helps

Going off topic - what trip did you do? Luderitz to Walvis? I'm planning on doing it next year or the year thereafter...

Any troubles in the sand with the Paj?

No, we went to NamibRand Nature Reserve and from there to Swakopmund. Just normal gravel roads.

I've never had a problem with the Paj in the sand in the past though. I even drive on the beach without deflating the tyres.

The Lüderitz/Walvis dune trip is also on my bucket list!
