New to the Pajero family...

Hi All.

My name is Berto and I have recently purchased a 3.0 V6 LWB Pajero. I'm quite happy with the vehicle yet I am of the opinion that it might need some attending to the motor. It uses roughly a pint of oil on each tank of fuel and needs the water checked about every 3rd day. It has 228 000 km on the clock. Is this normal? :oops:

If not please advise to what it would roughly cost me to have the motor rebuilt and who might be good with that in my area.

I stay in Hartbeespoort close to Pretoria.

Welcome Berto!

It seems as if you bought a Pajero with a tired engine.
The oil consumption is not normal, but could be a simple (common) wear item on those engines: valve stem seals.

The water loss is more of a concern, and could point to something rather serious.
I would take the Pajero to Mitspro in Centurion for diagnostics.

Had a chat with Freek from Mitspro just now. Looks like he knows Pajeros by heart. Will take the lady to him later this week. :D

Might be a silly question to some but, :oops: at what speed can one change between 2H and 4H in the Gen2 Pajeros? :roll:

Gen 3 is 100kph. I am sure the gen2 is the same??

Yes, both the original Super Select system used in the Gen 2 (and Pajero Sport) as well as the Super Select II system used in the Gen 3 and Gen 4 can be shifted from 2H to 4H at up to 100 kph. It helps to just back off the throttle slightly so that the drive train is not under a large torque load. This makes it easier for the front axle disconnect device to connect drive to the RHS front wheel (if my mind serves me well, it is the RHS front wheel that is disconnected from the front diff to effect 2H mode).

It is also possible to shift into 4HLc at practically any speed, as long as there is not a lot of speed difference between the front and rear axles. Once in 4HLc one can drive at any speed, but of course, it is not advisable to travel at the limits of the vehicle's adhesion with the center diff locked. The locked center differential will lead to greater understeer.

To shift into low range (4LLc) the vehicle has to be stationary and if it is an auto, it has to be in N or P. If it is a manual it needs to be in neutral or the clutch must be depressed.
