My personal opinion (and a bit of experience) is that metal is far superior in terms of robustness. You simply cannot secure plastic containers securely enough to a roofrack, and plastic is more vulnerable to damage. And a plastic one is not that much lighter than metal.

I tend to agree. I have four metal and one plastic. My concern with the plastic one is that the lid and breather lid are plastic with (IMHO) cheap (or at least badly designed) seals. I dont know how the plastic stands up to expansion for example.

The plastic is easier to handle though as it has two handles and it wont rust.
