Hi guys grate forum u have here
Im new too the pajero thing in fact I dont own one as of yet
I make a living working for an toyota dealer in centurion as a master technician I have recently decided to sell mi bike and get in to the 4x4 game After a looking at some 4x4 vehicle's I came too the conclusion that the car I want is a gen 2.5 swb 2.8
Now for te part if been dreading I would like too know if ther are any inherent problems or failure on the vehicle's as I am probably buying one that will have 200 000+km on the clock I have yet too perches one and am still looking
My next question the diesel consumtion wats it like in town and the open road
the injectors diesel pump and turbo are the least of mi warys
Then wat are the tings too look for wen buying an swb pajero 2.8

Hi.

I own a gen 2.5 but not the 2.8 diesel. I dont know of anything that really goes wrong on the 4x4 drive train and body in general, but I do know that there seem to be problems with the head on the 2.8. But that said I am no expert on the diesel engine.

I think if you have a general look at everything you should spot problems seeing you are a technical person.

All Pajeros are excellent 4x4's and the gen 2.5's is very strong and believe me when I say they can take a beating and still some.

I own a Gen 2.5, bought a secondhand. 3.0 petrol version with 177000 on the clock 5 years ago and I am still driving it and it now has 340000 on the clock. It is my only vehicle and I do town and country traveling (I do some work in remote villages)
Replaced clutch and inlet manifold. Otherwise I have it serviced regularly.
Am very happy with my LSP (little silver Pajero)
I presume diesel version is as reliable

Good day all
I have a 3.8 swb 2004 model.
I have just come back from doing a trip through Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe over Xmas and ended up doing 6000km getting stuck once and doing some intresting mud driving. I was towing a Xcape Caravan as well.
I achieve a avarage of 5km per lt
Is there any way I can improve on that and if so is there a workshop that i can take it to to help corrcet this problem as my fuel price was was way over my budget and I dont want to sell my Vechile due to this.
Please help

I have a 2000 model LWB 2.8TDi, which I have not had long but am very impressed with. We did about 5000km over the holiday season, varying from motorway driving, deep mud 4x4, long dust roads, crossing the Transkei, game viewing at low speed in low range conditions, you name it. Went like a dream, and extremely comfortable in all conditions. Makes me wonder why folks spend R500k when not much less comfort and enjoyment, if any, can be had for well under R100k.

It is the LWB, so very comfortable and spacious for 4 people with just enough loading space for all our camping gear, but a roof-rack will make things a bit easier for next time.

Consumption was just over 12l/100km on average. This varied between 11 best and 13.5 worst, the latter being pressure driving into a strong wind, lots of overtaking, hills, foot to the floor in many cases. The low speed low range stuff was also a bit on the higher side, but no more than about 13 or so. Open highways with no headwind or need to change speed much, and cruise control set to 120, was about 11. This impressed me, I must say, and getting 750km's or so before having to fill up was great.

There is a lot of info on this forum about the 4M40 motor, so suggest you do your research. The Colt version, which was made in South Africa, has experienced major problems due to a few changes they made compared to the Pajero (including single compared to double timing chaiin), which was made in Japan. The Pajero's have had their issues too, but much less frequently. Across the board, the main problem has been blown gasket and stuffed head, resulting from various initial problems, including broken timing chain (specially Colts), unmaintained injectors, clogged radiator, etc., basically some simple things which lead to sustained high EGT's. Knowing the history of the vehicle is the key point here, because if it has been well looked after, and you do the same, it will last you a lifetime.
