Hi all,

I need to replace the tyres on all 4 road wheels and two spares on my 2002 LWB Diesel Pajero Automatic.

The size is 265/70 R16 (maybe at a push 265/75 R16, but I am a little worried about the gearbox not locking up much in 5th if I go to that size).

The vehicle is my daily driver and so probably does 90% on tar and then one or two Bots / Zim / Kgalagadi type trips per year.

To date I have run Yokohama HT tyres (Geolander G-051). These have done well in terms of grip in all but seriously muddy conditions, but have not given great mileage and I have also experienced multiple sidewall punctures from acacia thorns (Ndumo, Kgalagadi).

I am looking for:
1. Some recommendations on specific tyres (brand and model) available in this size in South Africa to suit my needs. (Criteria: Strong sidewall puncture resistance, highway + offroad use, high mileage, good grip in all weather on road, reasonable offroad grip, good value). I do understand that an AT tyre will not offer much by way of mud performance.
2. Some recommendations concerning fitment centre in Jhb northern suburbs or thereabouts that understand that they need to tweak the alignment machine camber settings to compensate for raised suspension.

From my research, if suitable size tyres are available, my preferences would be (in alphabetical order) one of the following:

Your thoughts?

I have always been happy with my BFG AT tyres but some people say they are old school. I had General Grabber AT on a Disco4 and although a bit more noisy they also seemed OK. Not sure on tyre life as I sold the vehicle.

So I had the duellers that the Gen 4 came with. After a few slippery scares on freeways I decided i really needed to change despite my bridgestones still having about 40% tread left.

I used www.mufasa.co.za after monitoring them for a while. Their prices are realyl the best around, especially on their monthly specials. After speaking to other paj drivers with different tyres and reading loads of online reviews (especially on aussie forums) I chose Kumho KL78 All Terrains. Their price for my 17inch 65 profiles was R1845 each. I collected them in pretoria and their recommended fitment centre charged me only R40 per tyre to fit. Balancing and alignment were seperate but all in I paid aunder R10k for all 5, fitted. They even let me leave with my nearly new spare dueller which I traded for a case beers with another Paj owner

Anyway, i can say, after about 4,000km that the Kumhos have really impressed me. for ATs they're really low noise, their wet handling and braking is a huge surpise (good!) and they seem to have 'softened' the ride feel a touch. Only draw-back I can tell so far is that my fuel consumption has taken a slight knock. was getting average 11lt/100km and now I'm about 12.5lt/100km . even cruising consumption is affected. But I'm enjoying them!! The Micheline are really nice too, but more $$.

My next set will be Coopers AT3 - a bit pricey (but much cheaper than BFs). They come with the 85k kms guarantee, and are very quiet.

Out of frustration with
Bridgestone D695's that refused to balance
Bridgestone 864's with poor gravel performance and rapid wear on gravel
Goodyear HP with poor gravel performance and rapid wear on gravel
Goodyear AT/SA that makes a 'dish' on the centre bead
High pricing of all the BF 's and the cousins

My Supa quick convinced me to try Federal, a Chinese brand
Read up a bit on them, seem to be quite well sorted....
Went for the Couragia ( courage??)
265/65R17
15 000 km on, no drama
No chipping
No sidewall punctures
No panic in rain
Grips just fine in mud, no worse than any other tire.
Not noisy
Purposeful tread design ( I don't mind leaving it parked on full lock )
No signs of the 20 000km inspection that makes you realize they will not do better than 50 000km

My usage pattern is 140km/ h to sites 80-100km away
Then 50 km poorish gravel/mud/sand/loose stone at 70-100 km/h
Orchards/lands etc with LOTS of opportunities to puncture. Stones, thorn trees, etc etc
This is my almost daily pattern to my customers

Yes , it IS a sport again......

On my third Pajero.
I found that the Bridgestone HT's which came with the vehicle were not great on sand. Now on my second set BS AT's and find they are great. Got 60k out of the last set and they weren't finished yet.
