Hello,My dad drives the 3,6 l V6 2004 SWB,
His Pajero makes a noise and an hard ticking sound some times when he stops but if he changes from D to N then it disappeared.
It almost sounds like there is something loose, one thing I did find was that the two of the four bolts holding the bottom guard plate was broken off and was fixed with cable ties, we tightened the ties and he said that the noise is gone now.
Can that be the problem or is it the pump inside the gearbox that is giving a problem.

The engine in your Dad's Pajero is most probably the 3.8 V6.

I've never heard of a "pump in the gearbox" rattling, so I would guess that if the tighter ties stopped the rattle, that you have solved the problem.

Maybe get somebody to help your dad replace those bolts.

He did get the problem sorted out, he also got the broken studs out and we replaced the bolts.
I must check with him if it is the 3.8l v6.
