I would like to change my tyres to muds
Im currently running 255/70/15's, thinking of 31x10.5/15's but having read a few sites they recommend not going greater than 3% of the original tyre diameter.
Can someone with some insight into this give some info please. Whats the maximum size I could put onto the shortie safely - any chance of going say 33x12.5/15??
I know brand is always a hot issue, some say Maxxi's other say BFG's - any thoughts?
You're' unlikely to be able to fit more than 32's on a standard shorty... 31's you'll fit easily...

Well, I don't think an entirely stock blister fender will fit 32x12.5R15. However, either a small bodylift (say 40-60mm) or a 40mm suspension lift will fit 32's easily, 33's with a little rubbing of front mudguards and 35's with some body work. The body work needed for 35x12.5R15 is modifying the mudguards in the front wheel wells, probably shaving a bit of the bumper and possibly some minor cutting at the back of the front fender, although I'm not sure that's entirely necessary. Both the bodylift and suspension lift are relatively simple to perform, with plenty of writeups available on the web. I did the suspension lift and it took me an afternoon. People have done the bodylift in a day or a weekend. The bodylift is the better solution, as the center of gravity is kept lower.
I'm currently running 33x12.5R15 BFG All Terrains on my long wheelbase 98 blister fender. All the above bodywork is planned for my car, when I finish painting my fender flares and studded 35x12.5R15 winter tires are high on the wishlist. The 2.8TDI auto apparently came with the lowest gear ratios available for gen 2 cars and I have no problem with the 33's. My speedo is even correct, which means it would be markedly incorrect on standard tires.

hi guys.
last week i had OME shocks and coil springs fitted, the body went up by 40 mm, my tyres now look like dunkin doughnuts, can somebody who has 31 or 32 inch tyres post a pic please, i would love to get an idea what my gen 2 swb will look like.
i love those huge tyres that i see posted on the web/youtube , but i dont want to cut and chop anything.
current tyre size 245/75/15.

Here is my long wheelbase blister fender on 33x12.5R15. It has 40mm suspension lift and the cars imported here may have a small (25mm or so) bodylift, I'm not quite sure about that. The front wheels rub against the mudguards when it hits bumps with the steering at full lock, but that's easy to fix. The only reason I haven't done it yet is that I'm fitting fender flares and doing rather more modifications in the front wheel well. The idea is to be able to fit 35" tires, which requires some minor cutting.
The 10" steel wheels I have extend out a bit more than the 10" aluminum wheels I had previously so the tires stick out quite a bit from under the body, probably at least 30mm.
