I own a 2005 Pajero LWB and recently bought a Jurgens Xplorer caravan. My problem is that I had to fit a drop plate to my towbar to enable me to open the Pajero's back door when the caravan is hooked behind the car, otherwise the door won't be able to open pass the handle of the caravan's tow hitch. But this means that the caravan is angled very forward and the tow hitch is very low and does catch the ground when going through a ditch.
Has anybody had the same problem? Do you have a solution or any suggestion to solve the problem?
Thanks
Ockert
Raise your spare tire. There is a post somewhere on this forum about it.
Unfortunately not in the industry where I could get these plates made any more, otherwise I'd offer.
What ever you are pulling, should be perfectly level.

Ockert. You can't really open the boot while caravan is hooked-up. I just accept and arrange my life accordingly.
Dankie, Roelfie. Ja, dit is nie die spaarwiel wat die probleem is nie, maar wel die deur wat nie kan oopmaak nie.
There are a few tricks one can learn along the way:
1) Stopping at an angle to allow a little more opening room for the boot door.
2) Dropping the jockey wheel AND remembering to lift it up before driving off again.
3) Most off-road vans have removable jockey wheels. I'm pretty sure the Xplorer in the OP will also have one. It is better to remove the j-wheel in any case as it will push up against the spare wheel at some point when you go through a sharp enough ditch.

The Gen3 sparewheel sits higher than the Gen4's and slightly off centre. Not much to gain by lifting it as one would on the Gen4.
I try and fit my towball as high as possible to get the best clearance and then, as Roelf said, just live with not being able to fully open the door.

Hu guys,
I had the same problem on my Gen 3 LWB. When my Desert Wolf was connected, the rear door could only be opened by a few inches - too little to be of use. I solved the problem (not totally) by using a longer extension bar. The ball is now just behind my spare wheel (side on view).
To cater for the extra force that will react on the bar, we made the fixed tube longed and strengthened it with thick gussets. It has been in use for some time and few trips and still no problem.

Well I run an Echo Chobe caravan behind my Gen 3 and I have solved this problem by modifying the installation of the coupling mounted on the caravan's A-frame. It was previously bolted on the top channel lip of the A-frame and I refitted it to the bottom channel lip of the A-frame.
I also lowered the caravan's riding height slightly by rotating the axle 180 degrees en so removed the standard lift blocks under the U-bolts. My rig now runs level and I can open the back door of the Paj right up against the caravan's spare wheel.

Bigwill. I also have an Echo Chobe. Have looked hard at the axle setup and thought about removing those lifting blocks, but never thought about turning the axle up side down. If you would be so very kind and send ad many pics as you can and as much info as you wish about both the nose and axle jobs, then I'll be terribly indebted to you. Many thanks in advance. Your servant, Roelf
