Hi,
Im looking at buying a lwb gen 2, 2.8 at the moment, and I'm hoping to get some advice from from the fundi's, so please bear with me as i ask 100s of questions.
The vehicle I looked at is a 96 model, but has a number of features that make me think it is an import, such as heated seats, electrically adjustable shocks, and rear difflock. If it is an import, will i still be able to source parts from the agents if i need to, or will i be politely told to buzz off?
The car doesn't have a service record, and i am aware that there is always an inherent risk in buying a high mileage diesel. What i need to know is if there are any tell tale signs that will tell me the pin has been pulled on the grenade already. What i have noticed is that the car starts easily and does not smoke, the radiator has been replaced by silvertons, so it no longer has the plastic header tank, and the cylinder head is also cleaner than the rest of the engine which i assume means that it was replaced at some point as well.
There are a few things wrong with it, the first being the dash lights. When i engaged 4wd , the abs light came on and wouldn't go off again, what can this be? The lights showing the front wheels are being driven work fine when i engage 4wd, but flash constantly when i put it back in 2wd. I have read that this is most likely a faulty solenoid. Are they easily obtainable and do you have any idea what they cost, as the agents refused to assist me without a vin number?
The rest of the faults are more electrical. The rear left window does not work at all, the rear right only operates from the drivers control panel, the demister switch has fallen apart, and the electric window switches on the drivers armrest have so much play in them, they feel like they are going to fall apart at any moment. Will i be able to get second hand switches, or is it a common problem meaning that the used ones will also be faulty?
The handle by the numberplate light, that you use to open the rear door is broken. This looks like its going to be hell to replace, and I'm guessing is only sold as a complete unit making it expensive. Is that correct?
Aside from this, it is in good condition for its age, and only needs new tyres. What would you think is a fair price for this vehicle?
Thanks in advance
Conrad
Get the VIN number and phone your local Mitsu agent to get a part price. If the VIN is not on their system it is probably an import. The rims seem to indcate to me that it is not an import but the darker underpart two tone paint might again indicate that it is?
If it is not grey import and has all the necessary papers and second spare key etc I would say it is worth between R30 000 and R70 000 depending on other things like full service history, extras added, mileage.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response. I will ask for the vin number and take it from there.
With regards to your other questions, it is definitely locally registered and the licence is up to date.It has approximately 300 000km on the clock,no spare key,no service record and no extras aside from the bullbar and side steps seen in the picture.
The price is around R40,000.00 which I feel is fair, as overall it appears in good condition aside from the issues I listed previously. Does this sound about right?
Thanks

Price seem OK. You can also have a look at this one for sale by a Pajero "freak" in Witbank which is in the market for similar money.

Thanks for the heads up,Ill definitely keep that one in mind.
I want to share my experience with a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3l diesel that had 270 000 on the clock when I bough it. I got it for R85000 and the steering rack had a leak. A local workshop said it was easy they will remove the rack send it away for repairs and then fit it again. If I new then what I know now I would not had it done. When the rack was repaired and fitted the ESP light was on permanently on. I took it to the dealer to check what was wrong. Here follows a list of what I had to repair: Clock spring behind steering, gearbox overhauled, Engine management computer replaced, alternator, front diff bushes. The Jeep was out of order for six months. I thought all the problems must be fixed and I can drive carefree, wrong then the steering lock with the key pick-up packed-up and a week later the gearbox again went into limp mode. I had to refurbish the gearbox again. I spend all in all over R100 000 to keep the Jeep running. I sold it and got a 2010 LWB Pajero GLX with less than 40 000km on the clock for R250 000. Very happy. I tell you this because you don't know what is hidden and unless you have lots of money and patience don't by the old Pajero.

Hi pwp,
I only saw your response after i had actually bought the car. Im really hoping that it turns out to be more reliable than the jeep you had

Hi Conrad,
This is an import according to adjustable shocks, heated seats, ABS, rear diff lock, etc for a year 96 model. I also bet that you don't have tail lights in the rear bumper?
Nothing wrong with that since the registration in SA is done.
The only thing you will not be able to get here are the adjustable shocks. Not a big deal as you can replace them with normal shocks, and tie the actuators that usually sit on top of the shocks away. This system very likely doesn't work 100% anymore anyways.
If you really want adjustable shocks, last time I checked they cost around 150 pounds each in the UK. Add postage, VAT and a very bad exchange rate... and you'll go with normal shocks
Regarding the electric windows I have a similar problem on mine. Since the driver's switch controls all windows, as well as each window having its individual switch, you must identify if the problem is 1. the motor; 2. the main switch; 3. the individual switch; 4. a combination of 1, 2 and/or 3...
In my case looks like the main driver's switch is faulty. I haven't had luck in finding one, but haven't really looked either to be honest...
In the download section you'll find the wiring diagram that will help you understand how everything works.
Regarding the ABS fault when engaging 4wd I won't be able to help as mine doesn't have ABS, but my guess is that it's only a front wheel ABS (no sensors on the rear wheels) - but I could be wrong. Maybe it's related to your solenoid issue as maybe (again, just a guess) the ABS system is supposed to switch itself off when 4wd is engaged, but the system can't think of what's going on if it's unsure if the 4wd is engaged or not. I guess you'll have to do some research about how the ABS is supposed to work in order to identify the source of the problem.
Reading your original post again, you say the 4wd lights come on when you engage 4wd, but flash when you disengage it, indicating that 4wd is still on. Have you tried to go from 4wd to 2wd at the same time as taking your foot off the gas? Or if you change whilst the vehicle is immobile, try to reverse, it usually helps the transfer case to disengage.
Otherwise it looks like you bought it already so no point in talking about price anymore
Now time to fix it and enjoy it

Hi forest fab,
Thanks for the feedback.
Youre right, I have already bought it, and it's definitely a grey import. Unfortunately the previous owner didnt even know it was an import and couldn't tell me how it came to be in the country. Strangely it does have the lights in the bumper, but it also has rear heater, as opposed to the rear aircon, so Im guessing it came from somewhere colder like the uk?
Gulp, you're right at £150 i wont be buying any adjustable shocks. I still need to have the shocks tested, but im pretty certain that after 350k km, they will need replacing, but i will most likely get monroes or gabriel safaris.
With regards to the electric windows, its turned out to be multiple problems. I've had to replace both rear door switches, plus the left rear motor to get everything working again.
After a lot of reading on the overseas forums i have found out that there is nothing wrong with the abs. Abs doesnt work when you engage 4wd, so the abs light comes on. The light will only go off again when you turn the ignition off.
I havent yet had a chance to check out any of the mechanical components that may be casuing the flashing 4wd lights. I have tried things like reversing, changing while moving slowly, and while stationary , but none of those of managed to stop the lights flashing.
Ill post some updates of the progress in the other thread i started when it stops raining and i can take some decent photos

Hi,
If it's got the lights in the bumper, that means that it's a "proper" grey import. SA regulations make these lights mandatory.
I don't see why you only have the rear heater?
Rear heater is under the right hand side passenger seat (2nd row of seats) and the rear aircon is hidden in the rear most pillar, where the door hinges are. Well, when you look inside the boot, on the right you'll see a removable plastic panel that's got fins in it. That your rear air con unit
I've got Monroe gas magnum shocks on mine, and I'm extremely happy with them!
Cheers.
