I hope that someone has an answer to my problem, or at least some options to try.
I am currently stripping the motor on my 1997 3500 V6 DOHC, and the gearbox is not coming loose. I have made sure that all the bolts that keep the bellhousing and engine block connected, are loose. We have even gone so far as to use gwallas to pry the two loose from each other, but without luck. The gap between the two opens to about 50mm., but when the gwallas are removed, the space closes again.
Someone suggested I detach the bellhousing from the gearbox, and remove the block like that, but the only bolt I could see to loosen to achieve this, is so tight, I could not move it.
At this stage, it is only the block and the gearbox which is still in the vehicle, as all the other parts have already been removed from the engine.
I am using the Haynes manual for vehicles 1983 through 1996, but there is not a lot that is said about splitting the block and the gearbox. It seems that once the bolts are loosened, the engine should basically slide away.

Something funny is wrong there!
I assume it is a manual transmission?
My guess is that the spigot bearing has seized onto the main shaft of the transmission and the spigot bearing now is stuck to the end of the main shaft (having dislodged from the flywheel).
It cannot move through the clutch plate, because of this.
Remove the inspection plate located at the bottom of the bell housing.
Through the now exposed opening, you can remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel (by turning the engine you get access to all the bolts).
Once these bolts are removed, the pressure plate and clutch plate should come away with the transmission.

put a jack under gearbox. Jack it till it touches and then two more jack movements.
Then start lifting the engine. Look very carefully when the gearbox starts moving up. stop and then try to separate the two.
Are you sure the starter has been removed?

Have you pried off the lock ring from the release bearing, the clutch is a pull action not push.

My Pajero being a bastard between a Gen1, Gen2 and a Colt (as far as clutch assembly goes), I was not aware of that fancy clip goodie!

If not, my method will still work.

Something to remember.
The dismantling method I described can be used (in reverse obviously) to install the clutch plate and pressure plate.
This is how you do it:

- Assemble the (always new!) release bearing, pressure plate and clutch plate onto the transmission main shaft.
No alignment is necessary. - Install a new spigot bearing into the crankshaft.
- Mate the transmission to the engine. The only thing to worry about, is to get the main shaft into the spigot bearing (it helps to close your eyes!
) - Once the bell housing is in place and tightened, you simple install and tighten the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel.

- My method will work for release clip as well as seized spigot bearing. Your solution won't solve the bearing problem (if it exists).
- You Google, I know!
