Pajero / Touareg for this trip?

I intend doing the following trip shortly:
  • East London to Aliwal North (business)
  • Aliwal North to Lady Grey and then the Joubert Pass (gravel)
  • back onto the R58 and then take gravel short-cut to Wartrail (R393)
  • VolunteersHoek Pass to Tiffendell
  • Carlisleshoek Pass to Rhodes
  • NaudesNek to Elandshoogte and then over the Pitseng Pass to Mount Fletcher
  • R56 to Matatiele
  • Gravel short-cut to just south of Underberg
  • Underberg to Katse Dam via Sani Pass
  • Katse Dam to Golden Gate via Fouriesburg
  • Fouriesburg to East London (through KZN, Kokstad)
The question is: Do I use the Pajero or the Touareg?
The ONLY reason NOT to use the Tregg is the tyres.
285/45/19 Michelin Diamaris are most probably not the best choice for the bad gravel sections.
Pajero has 33/12.5/15 Duellers fitted, so no worries about tyres.
Everything else says 'Touareg'

It`s pity you are limited with the Touareg by the wheels. What are you options and plans with the Touareg`s wheels for the future ,are you going to "upgrade"

I plan to buy a set of 18” alloys (smallest dia that will clear the brake callipers), and fit AT or even MT tyres (255/55/18).
Either Goodyear Grabber AT2 or
Wrangler MTR.

That will only happen when budget allows.

Having 2 vehicles of that type at the same time I consider as "frozen capital" ;) ...another way of investing your money - some folks buy houses, some buy shares, some buy expensive gadgets, Gerhard buys cars

The Pajero is my 'bos' vehicle. My work demands that I go into very remote places, where lesser 4x4s will fear to tread. Paint damage is also accepted as part of the deal.

The Touareg is our 4x4 'platkar' and my daily driver.
The deciding attributes (when deciding to buy it) were:
  • safety (when the Pajero was built in 1989, air bags and NCAP ratings did not even exist)
  • comfort (2006 vs 1989)
  • we often do long distance trips (our family lives all over the country) and we need the combination of space, comfort, economy but did want to sacrifice the ability to take back roads (read gravel)
  • just for the sake of buying a 'legend' (V10 TDi)

The decision has just been made for me.

Annette and I actually decided to use the Pajero, then our plans were changed for us.

A family member lost his job, and his company vehicle with it! :(

The Pajero will be seconded to him for a while, so it (the Pajero) will be gracing the streets of George soon.

The Touareg it will be then, with a few spares tyre thrown in!
