2006 GLX Replacement Mags/Tyre size

Im looking for some advice from you guys. I recently bought a 2006 Pajero GLX with the 16" steel rims. Tyres fitted are 235/85/16 instead of the original 235/80/16. Im looking to replace these with some aftermarket mags to improve the look as well as revert to standard size tyres. From what I read the larger circumference tyres have a negative effect on the auto gearbox function and hampers power and fuel consumption.
Can anyone with experience confirm if I will get improvement in power and fuel consumption? I currently get around 8.5km/l
Also please advise what spec rims/tyres I should buy. Reading up I should go for either 265/70/16 or 245/70/16 on 8" mags? Will 17" mags also fit?
What offset should the mags be and will there be any issues with brake disks/wheel arched etc that I should consider?
Lastly which of these mags would look best on the car according to you guys?
