Gen 3: Dealers changed the oil filter design

Take note, you will no longer be able to buy the current oil filter at Mitsu - they changed the rubber oil ring on top of the filter.

The previous rubber ring was the square shaped one. The new one looks a lot thinner, tapered and more flimsy. The part number is also not the same, although they will know to give you the new one when asking for the old one.

I picked it up when changing the oil a few weeks back just before going to Moz. I tried to phone Mitsu for clarification as it seemed like they gave me the wrong filter. Today they confirmed the old ones were replaced with the new design.

For all purposes the filters look identical, except the rubber ring and part number.

Well, all this went down the day just before I left for Moz. Went to Mitsu, bought the filter, went home and took it out off the box when I already drained the oil. This was a half an hour before they closed shop for the day.

I put it on and tightened it. It did feel as if the new filter was hitting up against the steel engine housing as the new rubber seal was a lot thinner than the old one. Felt a bit like metal tightening on metal. This worried me, so I took it off.

I then saw the different seal, but was unsure if it was the wrong filter or simply a design change, as the rest of the filter looked 100% the same except for the part no and seal. Tried to call Mitsu before they closed, but no answer.

So decided to rather go to Midas/Autozone and buy an aftermarket one that I know will work 100% as I was leaving early the next morning. Thus, I returned the Mitsu filter unused.

I serviced my 3,2 SWB shortly before going to the Kruger from CPT last month. Fitted a new genuine oil filter. Within a day the car was leaking oil from the oil filter - I thought it was my mechanic who didn't fit it correctly - by not smearing oil on the seal before fitting the filter. I went on the trip and just kept an eye on my oil level. Had to put in four pints over 5,500km (however two of those were due to a attendant not fitting my oil cap back and me driving 100km with oil spewing all over my motor).

Serviced the car again shortly after returning to CPT and shat the mechanic out for not fitting the oil filter correctly - now I see this post and feel guilty that I was harsh on him when it could very well have been a part quality issue. I will find out from him if there was a difference between the two filters.

I recently bought an oil filter from the dealer for 2009 DiD Gen 4. The part no is 1230A154. I see on my previous invoice the part no was 1230A046. If one Googles part no: 1230A154 it seems this is meant for a Triton. Very confusing...will phone the dealer tomorrow to obtain clarity.

I obviously use different (and much smaller) filters, but you guys have me worried now. Still a few months before I'll need one, but I'll be sure to carefully inspect those rubbers.

Ok spoke to the parts department at Mitsubishi Menlyn and they informed me that part no 1230A046 has been superseded by part no 1230A154. This is for a Gen 4.
