Evening all

A newbie to owning a Pajero and 4x4 adventuring. So we planning a trip to Namibia soon.(Mostly Sand roads)

The 3.2 Pajero Gen 4 has over 200 000km, what critical spares do I pack ??( Maybe a dedicated Ammo box for all spare to fit into)

In 10 years of ownership and 260k km's including various trips, the only two things that have ever let me down was tyres and a battery.

Make sure you carry a decent repair kit and compressor. Needed it on a few occasions.

Have your battery tested properly before you leave and rather replace irrespectively if older than 4 years.

As far as spares are concerned - I don't carry anything. Can't even think of something I would need for the Pajie!

Must say I agree with Low Range.

In all my years of ownership of my previous Pajero and the current one I only had to replace tyres and battery in the bush. All the other items was either due to my own stupidity or aftermarket stuff. In the later years of ownership of my gen 3 when it was getting to be a bit more unreliable, if something broke it was not fixable in the bush, no matter what you carried with you.

I would take:

Basic tools and spanners(10, 12,13, 15 at least)

Tyre pressure guage.

Good, proper compressor. rather spend more and get a brand name

Replace battery or carry a spare battery or even one of those jump start thingies that you can buy nowadays. Also carry the biggest(thickest copper wire) and longest battery jumping cables that you can get. If an auto transmission vehicle's battery is flat you ain't going nowhere. I might even consider giving the starter a service before the trip on that mileage.

Maybe carry spare oil and air filter.

Some blade fuses, same size as the ones in your Pajero

Take out the vehicle jack and make sure you know where to use it on the Pajero, it is slightly different than what a lot of people think. Also check that it still has all it's fluid left to do the job. It seems a bit small but actually works very good when used as described in the manual.

Maybe carry some old fanbelts if you have.

What caused me mild inconvenience over 21 years of Pajero overlanding??

One battery failed (fortunately in Swakop) on a Damaraland trip. Twice did a battery fail a few days after an overland holiday.

One flat tyre.... oops, just remembered, two flat tyres (a decade apart).

I carry basic tools, compressor, snotplugs, Pratley Putty, fuses, packaging tape and cable ties.

Repair jobs are normally gas plate valves, camping chairs, electric lights, binoculars (once and failed) and the odd hangover

Gives me more confidence in this vehicle. I was thinking of fuses today. Something simple to pack in.

Battery: I should have 4x deepcycle packed in. Was thinking of installing a dual battery system as well.

Compressor yes I agree. Any brand recommendations and what flow rate don't want spend hours pumping one tyre

In addition to the above, I take a really comprehensive tool kit, silicone tape, binding wire, jumper leads made up with welding cable, heavy tow rope and shackles, plastic steel, light bulbs, jack block, enough water to both drink and refill the leaked cooing system. Pack these, the spare wheel and jack in an easily accessed spot.

Oh, and remember the person in a fix might not be you. I've helped a few stranded folk over the years and their gratitude makes it all worth while.

Apart from a lot of the above I normally carry a spare fuel filter, but more for Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Depending on the tyre life left consider fitting new tyres Yes, you might get another 10 000 km's out of the current ones, but they are far more likely to puncture or cut than new ones with 12mm a new rubber And it's a bit of a mission finding new tyres out in the sticks.
