Hello,

My brother in law (Triton driver) wants to buy a shorty for an off road "toy"

Don't know the Gen2 SWB very well, never driven one. But there seems to be a couple for sale. I believe they come in 2.8 diesel and petrol and it has solid axle at back

Would like to help him in the purchase as he want to spend about R100000 or less

Which gen would be the better for this role and "cheaper" to maintain for the older vehicle?

I have a Gen 2, 2.8 Diesel SWB and it does well off road. Some came with a diff lock, if I had to buy another one I would look for one with the lock.

The wheel articulation on the front wheels are not as good so the diff lock will help you a lot.

The gen 3 came with traction control which in most instances works really well as well.

I have the 2002 LWB Gen 3 and it has diff lock and works well off road and mud tires

TC only arrived in 2004. So Gen3 models pre 2004 will not have TC. Most would have a RDL, but I think there may be a few that don't have RDL.

Which would make a better play thing Gen2 SWB or Gen3 SWB?

I'm a huge fan of the Gen3 Pajero, but that is just me.

I'm also a huge fan of Gen3 but I think you will be able to lift the Gen2 more and put on bigger wheels as well

I had a 1998 Gen 2 SWB 2.8 TD Pajero. My first one. Also why I fell in love with Pajero. Now I have a 2005 Gen 3 TD Pajero. The Gen 2 2.8TD engines are prone to give problems. I spent R32k on mine. But its a awesome car. Excellent for offroading and making a toy. But I would stay away from the Diesel. The Gen 3 is an even better car but the parts are expensiff. You will also pick up problems with the gearbox if you fit bigger tires. Mine is standard and is n bit top heavy. So extreme 4x4ing might not go down so well. So point being, the Gen 3 is amazing but if you only want a Pajero for a toy I would say go for a petrol Gen 2. Parts are cheaper, you can lift it, put bigger tires on and the handling and extreme 4x4ing is right in the Gen 2's back yard.

Gen II much better off road, get a Gen II then fit a 3.2 DiD motor it is then a serious vehicle!!
