2005 3.2 Did swb accelaration problem

Hi All,

This will officially be my first time posting anything on a forum!

I need advise on an issue that is simply bugging me senseless!

My father in law recently bought a 2005 3.2 Did pajero. The car drives fine without any trouble but seems to be low on performance. This however is not my issue. When putting foot down the CEL comes on for a short while and then the car looses power. It almost feels like it is going into limp mode. The situation quickly restores itself but under hard acceleration there is a problem.

I checked and cleaned the problematic Egr and intake manifold already. All pipes in good order so I dont think it is an air supply issue. On doing a diy diagnostic scan fault code 43 and 49 popped up. Over boost and timing control valve errors.

Does any of you very knowlegable gents have suggestions as to how to fix this Problem? My life needs to return to normal and this is driving me insane not knowing. I am thinking of replacing the 2 speed sensors and the TCV. Since the fuel pump sits so accessible (eish) I want to get as many opinions as possible before doing the deed. If this fails then I am think the pump itself might be at fault.

Any advise will be much much appreciated!

Many thanks
Jaco

Damn that sounds complicated. Search the forums for similar diagnoses and please report back

Thanks Bakkies. Will do. Maybe Ill start with the basics and check the in tank fuel filter. Maybe fuel starvation?

Aggenee!

On error 43, start around the turbo Wastegate and check for full operation/functionality of the Wastegate arm, actuator and feed pipe to the actuator. The waste gate sits closed which means the turbo will boost until it reaches its target and the pressure in the actuator moves the rod arm which bleeds boost of allowing to the set point to be maintained.

For the other code I can't help you.

Goodluck

Great reply! Thanks very much. I also thought about the wastegate and already had a quick look. Felt the the actuator arm moved freely but I didnt do a proper inspection.

I suppose I need to invest in a manual pressure pump/guage in order to determine the pressure at which the wastegate opens?

Is it possible that a blocked pipe connected to the map sensor or a malfunctioning map sensor could falsely give an over boost signal to the ecu?

Thanks a lot so far.

Start at the most logical and easiest to diagnose first. The most likely is that it is overboosting. I would put a pipe onto the diaphram for the wastegate and see if you can suck and hold a vaccuum. Check this short pipe for leaks too. If it holds a vaccuum then the next step would be to actually test the boost pressure. Get a low pressure gauge or buy an actual boost gauge and a T piece from a tropical fish shop and T the pipe into the pipe that goes to the wastegate actuator. You need a long piece of pipe to temporarily go under the bonnet around the pillar, through the window and onto the dash. The reason is that you will get an incorrect reading just revving the motor. You need to actually drive it and put it into the next gear with your foot flat. Engine must be under load. You need an open / safe piece of road so the turbo has a chance to get to full boost. I must have a look and see what the boost pressure should be for Gen3. There has been much said on the internet but it differs from model to model. In the meantime check what boost you are actually getting.

Update: tested wastegate diafram and actuator started moving at 2.4 bar. From what I could find out this is too high and results in a sticky wastegate.

Now busy stripping half the pajero in order to remove the turbo. Not loving the Japanese at the moment!
