Hi. I'm based in kasane, Botswana so don't have access to a great deal of expertise when it comes to cars. I love Pajero's and last year bought a 2nd hand pajero io, petrol, year 2000. Ive had a strange problem for a while now connected with the engine light. It seems that when i fill with petrol the light comes on and there is no accelaration. I can drive but only at about 60 to 80km without light coming on and car not wanting to go any faster. Once petrol goes down then it seems to go better. Also, as an eg, i was driving yesterday 500km and having to slow down quickly to avoid potholes then build up again. After a while of this the engine light would start showing and car would not accelarate past 70/80 km without me first stopping the car, turning the engine off for 5 mins and back on again. Then it would right itself for a while. 2 mechanics have said i probably need a new gdi pump. Another one said the problem is the fuel cap. I can't get parts here so will have to orderbut i really want to be sure im ordering the right bit . There's obviously a huge price difference between a fuel cap and a gdi pump. Can anyone offer any advise or suggestions? Im not at all techy im afraid so assume you are talking to a complete novice. I'd really appreciate any comments as im at a complete loss and i need a relaible vehicle as i do a lot of voluntary work here and travel long distances. Thanks for reading and look forward to hearing back. Rowena
To check the fuel cap is easy: drive without it for a little bit and see if things get better. If they don't then it's not the culprit.
I have no experience on the GDI, but I've read issues on the V6 where the filter (probably near or within the pump) was giving issues. Not sure if your 2 litre (or 1.8?) could suffer the same problems.
In any case, I wouldn't just blindly buy a new pump...
Good luck, I hope you get this sorted quickly.

I had a similar problem with my 2000 3.5l v6 swb (petrol). When i received it, the fuel tank was very low and i filled it with unleaded 95 petrol (about 1/2 tank) and took it for service. Then drove it around town without any issues. then decided to fill up the tank for a trip outside town. When doing 80-90 Km/hr it started to loose power. The revs simply start dropping. However when the petrol is filled up to anywhere around half tank it moves without any problems. The yellow engine light is on permanently. You can clear the yellow light by disconnecting the battery while your lights are on for 5 min but it will come back again when you reach 80/90km. so i just live with it. I bought a new in tank fuel pump and guess what? In the process of replacing the pump (After slightly loosening the top cover on the fuel tank and having disconnected the hoses) i decided to connect back the hoses back and continue with the job the following day. So i drove the car with a slightly loose fuel pump cover and it ran normally again even with a full tank (its been 2 months now). so my only conclusion is that either there was an air lock in the fuel line or the tank needs to breath somehow! I haven't installed the pump and i do not think its necessary now.
That would indicate a faulty fuel cap.
Try tightening the fuel pump cover up again, and drive without the fuel cap, or at least not completely screwed in (don't loose it) and see if it helps with a full tank. Alternatively maybe remove the seal on the fuel cap so that you can lock it in, but still allow air through (just thinking out loud, I can't say if you can do it or not).
Good luck!

Your problem has probably already been solved but dirt in your fuel filter will also cause the engine light to go on. Try replacing that first before you do anything else.
